Early-morning authentic Trump post triggered by a NYT/Fahrenthold article critically framing the Reflecting Pool project. Response is a grandiose, splitting-heavy counterattack: predecessors 'hapless' and 'failed,' Trump 'resounding YES' summoned by 'patriots.' Third-person self-mythologization ('along comes TRUMP') marks elevated grandiosity. Round-number financial boasts ($390M saved, 2 weeks vs. 4 years) function rhetorically rather than evidentially. A telling closing disclaimer ('I didn't give out the contract, Interior did, to a contractor I did not know') reads as preemptive rationalization against conflict-of-interest scrutiny — psychologically revealing of anticipated criticism. Defense profile: devaluation, idealization, splitting, rationalization, mild projection. Trigger is narcissistic injury from criticism. No danger indicators. Cognitive presentation within baseline — coherent, syntactically intact, on-topic throughout. Consistent with longstanding pattern of media-attack posts following unflattering coverage.
- Early morning local time (~6:46 AM ET)
- Stream-of-consciousness drift from NYT attack to Reflecting Pool to self-credit
- Idiosyncratic capitalization ('Landslide', 'Reflecting Pool', 'TRUMP', 'Interior')
- Scare quotes around 'TRUMP', 'tiny', 'mess', 'reporter', 'Interior'
- Personal attack on named reporter ('lowlife David Fahrenthold')
Strongest facet: low modesty / high assertiveness
Primary drive: status
Trigger: Narcissistic Injury — Criticism (NYT article by David Fahrenthold characterizing Reflecting Pool work as superficial 'paint job')
Rage: Intensity 55% targeting New York Times / David Fahrenthold
None
- 'Landslide 2024 Presidential Election Victory' framing
- 'losing subscribers on an hourly basis' fabrication
- Characterization of NYT as 'constantly making major mistakes'
- 'Landslide' 2024 victory (actual margin ~1.5 points)
- NYT 'losing subscribers on an hourly basis' (contradicts public subscriber growth data)
- $55M figure for predecessors' Reflecting Pool work
- $400M / 4-year baseline used to compute $390M 'savings'
Documented spending on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool by the Obama and Biden administrations does not reach $55 million. Multiple sources (Wikipedia, Newsweek, Philadelphia Inquirer, NPR) confirm the 2010-2012 Obama-era renovation, funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus money, cost $30.74 million (with some accounts rounding to $34-35 million and Fox News citing $38 million). The 18-month project began in November 2010 and reopened the pool in August 2012, installing a new circulation/filtration system that drew water from the Tidal Basin. The Biden administration did not undertake major renovation work on the pool: according to Philadelphia Inquirer/NYT reporting, NPS head Charles F. Sams III inherited a three-part repair plan but bids came in unexpectedly high (over $100 million), so the Park Service instead relied on annual draining and cleaning. There is no documented evidence of $55 million in combined Obama-Biden spending on Reflecting Pool repair attempts. Additionally, the 'no success' framing is misleading: the 2010-2012 renovation reopened the pool successfully, even though chronic leakage and algae issues recurred over subsequent years. The $55 million figure appears to be a Trump exaggeration rather than a documented spending amount.
Trump won the 2024 election with 312 electoral votes to Harris's 226 and won the popular vote by approximately 1.5 percentage points (~2.3M votes). This is a clear victory but historically below the threshold typically described as a landslide (which usually denotes margins of 7+ points or 400+ electoral votes).
NYT subscriber data through 2025 showed continued subscription growth, with the company reporting record digital subscriber numbers. The claim of hourly subscriber loss is inconsistent with publicly reported figures.
Federal contract records contradict Trump's $5-6 million claim. According to NYT reporting by David Fahrenthold (the trigger for Trump's post) and confirmed by ABC News, The Hill, Philadelphia Inquirer, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, and PBS NewsHour: Trump initially promised the project would cost $1.8 million, but the Interior Department disclosed on May 8, 2026 that it would pay Atlantic Industrial Coatings $13.1 million — more than seven times the original promise. This included a $6.2 million addition to the previous $6.9 million no-bid contract. ABC News reported total project costs nearing $15 million when including a separate $1.74 million filtration system contract. Government documents obtained by NYT show the $13.1 million figure matches an offer from Atlantic Industrial Coatings that included a 20% profit margin. The DOI justified the cost increase by citing the need to expedite the timeline 'ahead of our 250th [anniversary].' On timeline, the project began surface work April 24, 2026 and remained incomplete in May 2026 when the lawsuit was filed; it has not been completed in '2 weeks.' Trump's own escalation from $1.8M to $5-6M in this post itself shows the figure is moving. The $5-6M figure is contradicted by current federal contract records.
The $390M+ savings figure is built on two unsupported premises that both collapse under scrutiny. First, the $400 million baseline that Trump cites for the alleged Obama/Biden plan is not documented in any independent reporting. Per The Philadelphia Inquirer's reporting, the actual full-overhaul plan inherited by the Biden administration's National Park Service (originally developed during Trump's first term in 2019) was estimated at 'more than $100 million,' and in other accounts at roughly $301 million — not $400 million. Critically, that full overhaul was never executed; the Park Service pursued stopgap measures after bids came in higher than expected, meaning no $400 million was ever budgeted, appropriated, or spent. Second, Trump's claim that his project would cost only $5-6 million is contradicted by federal contract records reviewed by the New York Times (David Fahrenthold), ABC News, and CNN: the project is now budgeted at $13.1 million, an 88% increase from the initial $6.9 million no-bid contract to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, after the Interior Department added $6.2 million. ABC News reported the total renovation cost is nearing $15 million when including a $1.74 million filtration system contract. Third, the comparison is fundamentally invalid because Trump's project (resurfacing/painting/joint waterproofing) is not equivalent in scope to the full reconstruction proposal it's compared against — the critical pipe replacement (2 miles of faulty pipes), identified as essential by the Park Service, remains undone. Even if one accepted the highest documented predecessor estimate ($301M) and Trump's actual cost ($13.1M), the savings would be approximately $288M, not $390M+. The Newsweek fact-check explicitly notes Biden's exact proposed cost remains disputed and the $390M savings figure 'cannot be validated against documented predecessor spending.'
David Fahrenthold has been a reporter at The New York Times since 2022, after previously working at The Washington Post.
The day started in the middle of a late-night posting binge before his trip to China. In under an hour he pushed out a stream of video clips about Obama, the Russia investigation and the 2020 election, many of them reposts of his own earlier material. After a short night he went after the New York T...
Analysis: Reflecting Pool / NYT Counterattack Post
Authorship. High-confidence authentic Trump. Early-morning ET timing, idiosyncratic capitalization, scare-quote habits, third-person self-reference ('along comes TRUMP'), named-reporter ad hominem, and the signature DJT sign-off all converge.
Trigger. A David Fahrenthold (NYT) piece characterizing the administration's Reflecting Pool work as cosmetic ('paint job'). This constitutes classic narcissistic injury — criticism that undermines a grandiose self-presentation about competence and cost-savings.
Psychological state. Grandiose narcissistic state with mild paranoid coloring. Splitting is unusually crisp: predecessors are 'hapless,' 'failed,' 'embarrassment'; Trump is 'resounding YES,' savior summoned by 'patriots.' The third-person 'along comes TRUMP' is a notable grandiosity marker — the self is reified as mythic figure.
Defenses. Devaluation (NYT, Fahrenthold, Obama, Biden), idealization (own project), splitting, rationalization. The closing disclaimer — 'I didn't give out the contract, Interior did, to a contractor I did not know' — is preemptive defense, suggesting awareness of potential conflict-of-interest scrutiny.
Rhetoric. Redemption arc: chaos under predecessors → order restored by Trump. Round-number financial framing ($400M vs $5–6M; '$390M saved') optimized for virality, not auditability.
Danger. None. No eliminationist or violent rhetoric; targets are institutional/individual reputational, not physical.
Cognitive. Coherent, on-topic throughout, syntactically complex. Within baseline.

> "Obama and Biden administrations spent at least $55 million attempting to fix the Reflecting Pool with no success"
vs.
> "Obama and Biden spent over $100 million on the Reflecting Pool"
Both claims are from the same speaker (Trump) on the same day (2026-05-12) about the exact same metric — how much Obama and Biden spent on the Reflecting Pool. The source says 'over $100 million' while this candidate says 'at least $55 million.' These are directly conflicting dollar figures for the identical factual claim; $55M is less than half of $100M+, and neither figure is qualified in a way that reconciles the two.

The Failing New York Times, which is one of the worst newspapers anywhere in the World, and is losing subscribers on an hourly basis, is now at it again. Just like they covered my Landslide 2024 Presidential Election Victory inaccurately, and without shame, constantly making major mistakes and incorrect predictions at every path along the way, they are now trying to justify Obama and Biden’s expensively botched attempt at fixing the long broken, unsightly, and unsanitary Reflecting Pool that NOW sits majestically between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. They squandered at least 55 Million Dollars haplessly trying, with no chance of success, to get the Reflecting Pool to work. Instead, they made it worse, keeping it closed for years, and ending up with a leaking, smelling, ode to both of their failed Administrations. It was an embarrassment to Washington, D.C., and to our Country, itself. Despite the vast sums of money spent, they never got the pool to work, and cosmetically it was a total mess for all to see. Now, along comes “TRUMP,” who is asked by many patriots if I can fix it. The answer is a resounding, YES, and for a “tiny” fraction of the cost! I worked with our now strong Department of the Interior and explained to them that we should view this as a highly sophisticated swimming pool, not the leaking, dilapidated facade, joints and all, of a building. Instead of taking 4 years to build, at a cost, granite pavers and all, of 400 Million Dollars, we could construct a far superior Reflecting Pool for 5 or 6 Million Dollars, and could complete the project in 2 weeks rather than 4 years. What a difference in time and money, and for a far superior end result! This is not just a paint job, like lowlife “reporter,” David Fahrenthold, of the NYT so inaccurately and maliciously stated, it is a deeply complicated work of smart and beautiful construction. It won’t leak, it will shine, and be the pride of Washington D.C. for decades to come. I saved more than 390 Million Dollars, and 4 years of no “mess,” and was, of course, given no credit by the biased New York Times. Also, I didn’t give out the contract, “Interior” did, to a contractor I did not know, and have never used before. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT
