Four faces in a row, two colors, no words

What he published is an arithmetic argument someone else built for him: four presidential headshots left to right, each over a count of "DAYS WITH CRUDE OIL ABOVE $100" — 308, 0, 83, 24 — with the two predecessors' figures in red and both of his own in green. He added nothing. The choice to pass it along without comment is the behavior, and the argument it makes for him is that his stewardship of energy prices is provable by ledger and his predecessors' is indictable by the same ledger.

The metric is the tell. Not average price, not price at a fixed date, not the spread: a day count above a round threshold, which is the one framing under which 0 becomes available as a term-length claim. A chart built around a threshold that one term never crossed was almost certainly built backward from that 0. Publishing it without adding a word is the lowest-effort form of self-endorsement in his repertoire, and also the most deniable: the assertion is made, the assertion is not his sentence.

Worth noting what he let stand uncorrected. His current term is 24, not zero, sitting inside a green bar. The chart works only ordinally — 24 is smaller than 83 and much smaller than 308 — so amplifying it means accepting in print that crude passed $100 on two dozen days on his watch. That is a mild concession for someone who rarely tolerates a nonzero figure beside his own name, and it aligns with the reporting that he pressed Zelensky at UNGA to stop striking Russian refineries. A president worried about the pump reads a chart about the pump differently than a president bragging.

The comparison, not the number, does the psychological work. Obama at 308 leads the row in red, which places the worst figure furthest from him and the reader's eye at the start of a descent story. Two prior administrations are collapsed into a shared color and a shared failure, his two into a shared color and a shared competence. That is the all-good/all-bad sort applied to a commodity price series: the graphic performs the splitting so he does not have to phrase it, and the devaluation of Obama and Biden arrives as design rather than as insult. Status is the motive in play — rank on a scoreboard — rather than the grievance or persecution register that drives his more agitated output.
