Post from Truth Social

George Santos was somewhat of a "rogue," but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison. I started to think about George when the subject of Democrat Senator Richard "Da Nang Dick" Blumenthal came up again. As everyone remembers, "Da Nang" stated for almost twenty years that he was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having endured the worst of the War, watching the Wounded and Dead as he raced up the hills and down the valleys, blood streaming from his face. He was "a Great Hero," he would leak to any and all who would listen — And then it happened! He was a COMPLETE AND TOTAL FRAUD. He never went to Vietnam, he never saw Vietnam, he never experienced the Battles there, or anywhere else. His War Hero status, and even minimal service in our Military, was totally and completely MADE UP. This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN! George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!

Trump announces commutation of George Santos's prison sentence using an elaborate whataboutism comparing Santos's fraud convictions to Senator Blumenthal's Vietnam service fabrications. The post is clinically significant for its explicit articulation of a transactional loyalty framework: Santos's crimes are mitigated because he "ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN." This represents antisocial reasoning where legal and ethical norms are subordinated to partisan allegiance. The dramatic embellishment of Blumenthal's fabrications—adding vivid battlefield imagery ("blood streaming from his face," "raced up the hills") that Blumenthal never actually claimed—demonstrates either deliberate distortion for rhetorical effect or confabulatory narrative construction. The splitting defense is stark: Santos possesses "Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence" while Blumenthal is a "COMPLETE AND TOTAL FRAUD," with the moral distinction resting entirely on party affiliation rather than the nature or severity of the deception. The use of executive power to reward political loyalty while constructing elaborate justifications through false equivalence represents a significant marker in the longitudinal pattern of norm erosion around rule of law.

Danger Assessment

None

Gaslighting Detected:
  • Dramatically embellishing Blumenthal's actual claims to make false equivalence more compelling
  • Framing Santos—convicted of multiple federal crimes—as a sympathetic victim
Reality Distortions:
  • Blumenthal never described battlefield scenes with 'blood streaming from his face'
  • Blumenthal did serve in the military (Marine Corps Reserve); his service was not 'totally and completely MADE UP'
  • False equivalence between misrepresenting military service (not a crime) and wire fraud/money laundering (federal crimes)
Fact Checks (5)
"Blumenthal stated for almost twenty years that he was a proud Vietnam Veteran"
Mostly True

Blumenthal did repeatedly misrepresent his service over many years, saying he served 'in Vietnam' when he served stateside in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam era.

"Blumenthal described battlefield scenes with blood streaming from his face"
False

Blumenthal's documented fabrications involved claiming to have served 'in Vietnam' and referencing the poor reception veterans received upon return. He did not describe the cinematic battlefield scenes Trump attributes to him.

"His War Hero status and even minimal service in our Military was totally and completely MADE UP"
Mostly False

Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1970-1976. His military service was real; what he fabricated was serving in Vietnam specifically.

"George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time"
Unverifiable

Santos's specific prison conditions are not readily verifiable from public sources.

"Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN"
Mostly True

Santos voted with Republicans during his time in Congress, though this is a value judgment framed as fact.
