Psychological Analysis: "Good riddance!" (2022-12-09)

Post Overview

A terse, two-word commentary ("Good riddance!") attached to a link about CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr leaving the network after 20+ years. This is a minimalist expression of contempt directed at a journalist from a network Trump views as adversarial.

Context

This post appears during a period of significant legal pressure (Trump Organization convicted on all 17 counts of tax fraud, classified documents found in storage unit) and political setback (Warnock defeating Trump-backed Walker in Georgia). The post is notably disconnected from these pressing concerns, suggesting displacement activity — focusing aggression on a safer, lower-stakes target rather than engaging with more threatening realities.

Authorship

Posted at 3:03 PM ET (Trump likely at Mar-a-Lago, so same timezone). Business hours but the brevity, aggression, and impulsive quality ("Good riddance!") are characteristic of authentic Trump. An aide would be unlikely to post gratuitous hostility toward a departing journalist with no strategic value.

Psychological Dynamics

The post functions as a minor dominance display during a period of significant narcissistic injury. With the Trump Organization conviction, classified documents exposure, and Georgia loss all converging, this post represents a low-risk outlet for aggression — celebrating an enemy's departure rather than confronting actual threats.

Barbara Starr, as CNN's Pentagon correspondent, would have covered stories unfavorable to Trump's defense/military narratives. The "good riddance" framing positions her departure as a victory or punishment, consistent with the schema that critics will eventually be vanquished.

Defense Mechanisms

• Displacement: Redirecting hostility from actual threats (legal, political) to a safer target
• Splitting: CNN/journalists = all-bad; their departures = victories

Rhetorical Analysis

Maximally economical — two words plus a link. The exclamation point adds triumphalism. This is celebratory cruelty, taking pleasure in a perceived enemy's departure from a platform. No argument, no substance — pure affect.
