Eleven fifty-three at night, Manhattan, UNGA week

The timestamp converts to 11:53 PM EDT on September 22. Trump was in New York — the September 21 post places him there ("While in New York City, I'm on the way to... Gracie Mansion"), and this post's own content puts him inside the UN press orbit. That is the hour, the city, and the stimulus class where his authorship signal is strongest: a same-evening reaction to a specific person he saw or was told about, in a specific physical location ("in the Press Area, at the United Nations").

The internal markers agree. Scare-quoted sneers deployed as punctuation (Third Rate "Reporter," the "good news," a "TRUMP" addiction), the in-house coinage "MSDNC," capitalization that follows heat rather than grammar (SLEAZEBAGS, Lunatics, Judge), and a sentence that comes apart in the middle rather than reading as anything a staffer would file. The voice is first person throughout, down to the "President DONALD J. TRUMP" signature block he signs himself.

Turning being ignored into being needed

The grievance has an odd shape worth stating precisely: the complaint is that they said they weren't going to be covering me, and then showed up anyway. Both halves are injuries, and the second is offered as proof that the first was a lie. The resolution he reaches — "She's got a 'TRUMP' addiction, and so does CNN and MSDNC" — converts hostile attention into compulsive need. Under that reading, coverage he dislikes and coverage he wants become the same evidence: that he is the fixed point others orbit and cannot leave.

This is the post's central operation. The attributed compulsion ("addiction") describes his own documented relationship to cable coverage more accurately than it describes theirs; the mechanism is projection, and it arrives carrying its own relief. Announced withdrawal of attention is the sting that starts the post; "addiction" is the formulation that cancels it.

A judge with no antecedent

The last substantive sentence breaks: "The 'good news' is that they have a great, for them, and totally disloyal Judge." The post identifies no case anywhere — no court, no ruling, no party — which rules out reading the line as a reference his audience could follow to anything outside his own head. It also arrives with no bridge from the UN press area, where the previous sentence left off. The parenthetical "for them" is jammed between adjective and noun, self-interrupting mid-phrase.

Two things sit inside that fragment. One is structural — a topic arriving with no setup and a clause that folds in on itself, mild tangentiality of the kind that tends to show up in his late-night unedited posts rather than his daytime ones. The deviation is slight; the first three sentences are coherent and argue a position. The other is the word "disloyal." A judge ruling against him is not described as wrong, biased, or mistaken but as having broken faith — which presumes the faith was owed to him personally. The same axis runs through "treasonous" a sentence earlier. Adverse coverage and adverse rulings are both sorted as betrayals of a person rather than disagreements with a position.

Treason, applied to a named reporter

"They're all sick, treasonous, and demented!" is the line that carries weight beyond rhetoric. It follows a named individual — Kaitlan Collins, identified by employer and physically located at a public event — and a psychiatric aside about her ("a truly unhappy person"). Treason is the one crime the Constitution defines, and applying it to a journalist for attending a press area collapses adversarial coverage into capital disloyalty for an audience that takes his framings as fact.

What is absent is any instruction: nothing here tells a reader what should follow, and nothing asks anyone to gather or act. The escalation stays at the level of category — he sorts who they are and stops. That absence is what holds the assessment at elevated rather than higher, though the naming of an individual reporter alongside a treason charge is the part that does not stay contained on a page.

Where this sits against the week

The five preceding posts are mostly placid by his standards — an amiable Gracie Mansion note, a policy link, a thank-you to an athlete, a munitions denial. The munitions post ("The cowards and traitors would love to say...") shares this one's vocabulary of betrayal, which suggests the register was already warm. This post is the week's spike: the first to fix on a single named person, the first to reach for "demented," and the only one whose syntax comes apart.

The state is mixed rather than purely grandiose. The expansive claim (the world's press cannot quit him) is doing repair work on a wound the post discloses in its own opening — they announced they would stop covering him, and the courts are not with him either. Grandiosity here functions as the bandage over that.

Fact Verification

CNN and Collins explicitly and repeatedly denied ever saying they would stop covering Trump. After Trump told her at the UN on Tuesday, September 22, "You should not be here covering me. You said you weren't going to cover me," Collins answered on the spot, "The United Nations allowed us in, sir" (Mediaite, HuffPost, Axios). She addressed the accusation directly on air that evening on Anderson Cooper 360: "The president himself there was saying something that CNN has never asserted about not covering him. We've never said that," adding, "The president is the one who's trying to dictate how we cover him. And of course, it is still our job to do so" (The Daily Beast). She also said CNN would "continue to cover the president, and his speech and as he meets with world leaders... just not with a TV camera from one of the five major networks in the room."

The kernel of truth Trump appears to be stretching: on Monday, September 21, the five members of the White House television pool consortium (Fox News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News) jointly suspended pooled coverage in protest of the ban. Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, acting chair of the consortium, wrote to members that "Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President" (Fox News, CNBC). Their joint statement read: "The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting."

Three reasons that statement does not sustain the claim as phrased. First, it was a five-network decision announced by Fox News, not a CNN or Kaitlan Collins declaration. Second, it suspended only pooled camera coverage of designated pool events, not coverage of the president generally, and networks continued independent newsgathering (CBS News). Third, CNN's actual posture was the opposite of declining to cover him: it sued in federal court on Monday, September 21, to overturn the ban and restore access, and it covered Trump at the UN under credentials issued by the United Nations itself. Collins was in the press area precisely to cover him.

The referent is U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly of the District of Columbia. CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued Trump and senior officials in federal court in Washington on Monday, September 21, 2026, alleging the White House ban was viewpoint discrimination violating the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause. The case was assigned to Kelly, who ordered the Justice Department to respond to the plaintiffs' temporary restraining order motion by Tuesday and set a hearing by videoconference for Wednesday, September 23, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern (CNBC, CNN Politics, NBC News).

Trump himself supplied the identification in other Truth Social posts the same week, which is what makes the vague reference in this post traceable. He wrote: "They have drawn a great Judge, for them. A man who ruled in favor of Jim Acosta, who now seems to have disappeared from the Planet," and separately, "The Judge's name is Tim Kelly, and he was, sadly, appointed by 'TRUMP'" (Raw Story, Deadline). The "great, for them" and "disloyal" phrasing in the post under review tracks those two statements exactly.

What verifies: Kelly was nominated to the bench by Trump on June 7, 2017, confirmed by the Senate 94-2 on September 5, 2017, and commissioned September 8, 2017 (Wikipedia, federal judiciary records). He did rule for CNN in 2018, granting a temporary restraining order on November 16, 2018, that required the White House to restore chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta's press pass; Kelly grounded the order in Fifth Amendment due process, saying the process for revoking the credential was "so shrouded in mystery that the government could not tell me" who decided it, and expressly declined to reach CNN's First Amendment claim. CNN dropped the suit after the pass was permanently restored (The Hill, NPR, Washington Post, Variety). So the factual basis for expecting a plaintiff-friendly draw is genuine.

What does not verify: no ruling had issued when the post was published late on September 22. The temporary restraining order hearing was still a day away. Trump was predicting a loss and pre-announcing an appeal: "Almost without question and, as usual, we'll go for appeal." Deadline headlined the situation "Trump Vows To Appeal Ruling In Networks' White House Ban Lawsuit, Even Though Judge Has Yet To Rule."

"Totally disloyal" is a characterization, not a checkable fact, and it presumes a federal judge owes personal allegiance to the president who appointed him, which is contrary to the judicial role and to the Article III life-tenure design. Kelly's record is also not uniformly adverse to Trump: he declined to issue a temporary restraining order in English v. Trump (2017), allowing Mick Mulvaney to remain acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; he presided over the Proud Boys seditious conspiracy prosecutions, refusing to dismiss conspiracy charges in December 2021 and producing convictions in May 2023; and in July 2026 he dismissed the case against four defendants "under protest," saying precedent obliged him to grant the Justice Department's motion. |
