Post triggered by a narcissistic injury of the exposure subtype: press claims that a personal 9/11 narrative is fabricated. Written ~8:37 PM EDT in Washington, D.C., hours after commemorative remarks on the Ellipse and a day before the 25th anniversary. Authorship is almost certainly unassisted — evening timing, first-person reactive voice, mid-sentence self-interruption, drift into unrelated electoral grievance, idiosyncratic capitalization, and the signature close. The post is unusually evidentiary for this subject — named corroborating witness, quoted ceremony policy, attached 2001 video that does corroborate a downtown visit — but the evidence is used to license a far broader certification ('Everything I said was exactly accurate'), and it sits alongside a personal demolition entirely outside the argument: a journalist renamed with a larval-insect epithet and attacked on physical appearance. That gratuitousness supports an ego-syntonic sadism reading. State is mixed: persecution material repaired within single sentences by grandiose compensation ('their approval ratings are at an All Time LOW, but mine are VERY HIGH!'). Defenses are immature — devaluation substituting for rebuttal, splitting, projection of unverified assertion — with an overdetermined, kettle-logic rationalization of the Pentagon attendance signaling defensive load. Communion is near-absent on a commemorative occasion involving mass death; victims and responders serve as setting and credential. Danger is elevated for targeted harassment, not violence: a named journalist, dehumanizing epithet, and an explicit demand she expose confidential sources. Cognitive presentation is stable; 'Hagerman' for Haberman warrants longitudinal follow-up.
- Evening local time (~8:37 PM EDT, Washington D.C.) — outside staff business hours and hours after the event referenced
- First-person voice throughout with grandiose self-referential asides ('I speak enough')
- Signature closing formula: 'Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP'
- Deliberate insult-naming of a journalist ('Maggot Hagerman') — an aide would not publish an appearance attack under the President's name
- Erratic comma placement and mid-sentence self-interruption: 'Well, I don't think I would be the first thing on anyone's mind but, I was there'
Strongest facet: angry hostility (Neuroticism) coupled with ceiling-low modesty and tender-mindedness (Agreeableness)
Primary drive: validation
Trigger: Narcissistic Injury — Exposure (New York Magazine story disputing his post-9/11 presence at the World Trade Center site, plus reporting attributed to Maggie Haberman regarding the Pentagon ceremony)
Rage: Intensity 70% targeting Maggie Haberman personally; New York Magazine and the press collectively
Elevated
- Named individual journalist targeted by a head of state before a large aligned audience
- Dehumanizing epithet applied repeatedly to that individual ('Maggot')
- Appearance-based degradation ('unattractive both inside and out') inviting audience pile-on
- Explicit demand that she expose confidential sources — pressure on source protection with downstream safety implications for third parties
- Blanket bad-faith attribution to the press as a class ('liars and scoundrels')
- Timing on the eve of a high-salience national anniversary, amplifying reach and emotional charge
- No mobilization cue, implied action, violent imagery, or location — stochastic-terrorism triad is incomplete
- DARVO structure: accused of fabricating a personal history, he reverses to cast himself as victim and the reporter as the liar and offender
- Attack on the reporting apparatus itself ('The Fake News doesn't want to listen', 'so-called journalists') rather than on the specific factual dispute
- Assertion that opponents know they are lying — removing good-faith error as a possible explanation
- Demand for source disclosure framed as a truth test she cannot pass
- Loyalty-test embedding: acceptance of the 'won three times' falsehood is bundled into an otherwise evidence-backed argument
- 'I won the Presidential Election three times' — denial of the certified 2020 result
- 'their approval ratings are at an All Time LOW, but mine are VERY HIGH' — inflation of his own approval, which tracks in the low-to-mid 40s
- 'Let her reveal her sources, because they don't exist' — asserting knowledge of the non-existence of another party's sources
- 'certainly there was no fact checking for her story — There never is!' — absolute claim that a news organization never verifies
- 'Everything I said was exactly accurate' — total-accuracy certification extended beyond what the attached clip establishes
- 'even when they know their story is false' — attributing conscious knowledge of falsity to reporters
Dehumanizing Language Present
The attached video is consistent with the widely circulated September 2001 street interview in which Trump, standing in Lower Manhattan, says 'I was just down to ground zero' and 'I have about 100 men working down here.' Contemporaneous footage therefore supports his presence in the vicinity of the site within days of the attacks, which is the core of his claim. The subsidiary detail — that a large crew of his workers performed cleanup at the pile — has been contested by recovery officials and journalists over the years and is not established by the clip, which shows him asserting it rather than documenting it. Verdict applies to the visit itself.
Since the 10th anniversary in 2011, the official National September 11 Memorial ceremony in New York has operated under a policy barring political speeches; elected officials attend and, in some years, read passages or names, but do not deliver remarks or addresses. His characterization of the policy is substantially accurate, with the minor qualification that officials have at times participated in readings rather than being wholly silent.
He won the 2016 and 2024 presidential elections. He lost the 2020 election to Joseph R. Biden Jr.; the result was certified in all states, upheld across dozens of federal and state court proceedings, and confirmed by state-level audits and recounts. No third victory exists.
The first half is defensible: Gallup and Pew have documented public trust in mass media at or near record lows in recent years. The second half is not supported: his job approval has consistently tracked in the low-to-mid 40s across major aggregators during his second term, which is neither historically high nor high in absolute terms. The 'VERY HIGH' characterization inflates the figure, and the paired construction implies a contrast the polling does not show.
The underlying relationship is accurate and the underlying trip is partly documented, but the specific assertion about Calamari is unsupported and runs against a documented decade-long pattern of him not speaking to reporters at all.
What checks out: Matthew Calamari Sr. was indeed Trump's personal bodyguard and the Trump Organization's director of security in 2001, hired after ejecting hecklers near Trump at the 1981 US Open and promoted to security director of Trump Tower in the early 1990s. "My then Head of Security" is a fair description. Separately, Trump genuinely was in Lower Manhattan shortly after the attacks: the earliest documented footage places him blocks from the site on Sept. 13, 2001, giving interviews to WWOR-TV and the German broadcaster N24, saying "I have a lot of men down here right now. We have over 100 and we have about 125 coming."
No trace of the Calamari confirmations: an exhaustive search across twenty-five years of reporting and fact-checking on Trump's 9/11 claims turned up no instance of Calamari confirming this trip to any journalist. That body of work includes PolitiFact (July 2019, Sept. 2023, Sept. 8, 2026), Snopes (2019), Poynter (2019, 2023), PBS NewsHour (2026), CNN's Daniel Dale (Sept. 8, 2026), Newsweek's timeline of the evolving account, the Washington Post and the AP. None cites Calamari. The one named corroborator recurring in this coverage is former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who told Breitbart in 2019 that Trump "was on Ground Zero numerous times — no cameras, no press, no nothing." Kerik, not Calamari, is the person who has gone on record.
Calamari's verified lifetime press record is two engagements, both a decade old, neither about 9/11. The first is a genuine in-person sit-down with Bloomberg's Max Abelson for "How Trump Invented Trump" (Sept. 3, 2015), conducted in Calamari's Trump Tower office — Abelson describes the room and notes Calamari rising from his chair to demonstrate how he escorted Trump in the early days. Quotes include "I love the guy," "My thing is, I've always promised I would, knock on wood, never let anything happen to him," and his account of the 1981 US Open ejection. This single interview is the origin of essentially every Calamari quote later recycled by CNN, the Washington Post and Business Insider. The second is an emailed on-record response to Politico Magazine's Michael Kruse for "The Executive Mr. Trump" (July 2016), about Trump's management style and hiring instincts. Both concern his own hiring and his loyalty to Trump. Neither mentions 9/11, ground zero, or September 2001.
Since October 2016 the record is uniform non-response, spanning exactly the period in which these 9/11 claims were most heavily litigated in the press: BuzzFeed News, Oct. 1, 2016 ("Neither of the Calamaris responded to requests for comment"); BuzzFeed News, Aug. 12, 2017 ("did not return multiple messages seeking comment"); Washington Post, Feb. 28, 2019 ("could not be reached for comment"), which also observed that "Calamari has largely stayed out of the media limelight"; Insider and NBC News, June 2021; Daily Beast, Sept. 2021 ("declined to comment"); CNN, May 3, 2023 ("An attorney for Calamari Sr. did not respond to a request for comment"). Every statement issued in his name since 2021 has come from his attorney Nicholas A. Gravante Jr. or from the Trump Organization, not from him. He did not testify at the 2022 Trump Organization criminal tax trial and was never subpoenaed by the Manhattan grand jury in 2021.
The most direct counter-evidence is contemporaneous. On Sept. 8, 2026, the same day as this post, PolitiFact sought details on Trump's time at ground zero; the White House referred the inquiry to the Trump Organization, where Calamari is chief operating officer, and the Trump Organization did not return the request. CNN's Daniel Dale, asking the same day, received an unsigned White House email saying Trump "was a private citizen at the time, not everything he did was documented," with no witness offered. Poynter previously noted the Washington Post and AP got no response from Trump's team when seeking corroboration, and Snopes in 2019 contacted two men deeply involved in the recovery who said they saw no evidence of Trump or his men.
Limits on certainty: paywalled historical archives (ProQuest, Newspapers.com, Factiva, the NYT TimesMachine, and the New York tabloid morgues) were not searchable, so an unrecovered pre-2015 quote cannot be excluded outright, and that gap covers 2001 through 2014. A private, never-published confirmation likewise cannot be strictly disproven. But a man whose entire verified press output is two interviews in 2015 and 2016, and who has not answered a reporter in ten years, cannot have confirmed anything "many times, to many different Journalists." Note also that several search-engine summaries encountered during this research restate Trump's own Truth Social assertion as though it were reported fact; at the source level no outlet independently reports a Calamari statement. Grokipedia's page on Calamari was reviewed and discarded as a source: it attributes to him a Bloomberg quote that does not appear in the Bloomberg text.
The claim has two parts. The subordinate half is confirmed; the load-bearing half, the "strong request," is undocumented and cuts against the administration's own on-record account of how the decision was made.
Confirmed: Vice President JD Vance represented the administration at the World Trade Center ceremony for the 25th anniversary, with other officials sent to Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This was confirmed by a White House official and reported by AP, NBC News, ABC News, CNN and Fox News, and Vance confirmed it himself at a White House briefing on Sept. 3, 2026. The arrangement also repeats 2025, when Trump marked the anniversary at the Pentagon while Vance and Usha Vance attended the ground zero commemoration, so the president-at-Pentagon, vice-president-in-New-York split is a normal division of labor, which is itself a reason no special external request would have been needed.
Not confirmed, and contradicted in sequence: no outlet, and no statement from the Pentagon, the Defense Department or the White House, documents any request, strong or otherwise, that Trump attend the Pentagon instead. Four pieces of evidence run the other way.
First, Vance's own explanation, given at the White House briefing room on Sept. 3, 2026 when asked why he and not Trump was going to New York: "We just decided as a team that I would go to New York for 9/11 and the president would stay here in D.C., of course, to commemorate what happened at the Pentagon, because that was a critical part of the tragedy of 9/11 as well." That describes an internal allocation, not an external request. Vance also said there was no indication Trump was staying in Washington for security reasons.
Second, the AP reported that Trump's team conducted advance visits at ground zero and "had initially signaled to officials in New York and in Washington that the president intended to visit the memorial space," and that "the president's interest in speaking on 9/11 was conveyed to memorial planners in recent weeks." The New Republic likewise reported that White House officials initially told organizers he would visit the memorial. The Pentagon was therefore where the plan landed after a pivot, not a destination he had been asked to take instead.
Third, when a reporter asked Trump directly on Aug. 28, 2026 why he would not be in New York, his entire answer was, "Because I'm going to the Pentagon." He offered no request, no invitation and no third party. The "strong request" framing surfaced only later, in the Sept. 8 Truth Social post rebutting Maggie Haberman.
Fourth, the White House had every opportunity and motive to cite such a request and never did. The New York Times, citing multiple people with knowledge of the planning, reported that memorial planners reminded Trump's team of the site's rule barring politicians from speaking, in force since 2012. White House communications director Steven Cheung dismissed the story as fake news and a senior official called it false, but neither offered a competing account, and spokeswoman Anna Kelly's statement addressed only honoring victims and first responders. The Times stood by its reporting as "based on information from multiple people with knowledge of the discussions and planning around New York's Sept. 11 ceremony."
Context: Snopes examined the underlying dispute and found no evidence conclusively confirming or debunking the Times account, while confirming that a 9/11 Memorial and Museum spokesperson has said the organization has "intentionally worked to keep the commemoration free of politics" and that politicians do not deliver remarks. The memorial told the New York Post that Trump is "always welcome." Reporting also noted logistical factors favoring Washington: a Republican event in Dallas on Sept. 9-10, a Sept. 12 flight to his Doonbeg, Ireland golf course, and less regional traffic disruption flying from Joint Base Andrews than from a New York airport. TheWrap characterized Trump's passive-voice phrasing as a claim that the Pentagon made the request, but that is the outlet's reading of Trump's words, not independent confirmation.
No contradictions with other posts detected yet.
Trump spent his evening in Washington firing back at a New York Magazine story questioning whether he had really visited Ground Zero after 9/11, posting thirteen times in under two hours — mostly 2001 news clips of himself at the site, offered as proof. The written part of that burst was the angries...
Overview
Post ID ts_117238282851088051 — Truth Social, 2026-09-09T00:37:08Z. Trump was in Washington, D.C. that day (Tunnel to Towers / 9/11 first-responder event on the Ellipse, per the event record for Sept 8), departing for Dallas the following day. Converting to local time: ~8:37 PM EDT on September 8, 2026 — evening, several hours after the event he references, and roughly 24 hours before the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
The post is a long, single-author rebuttal to two press claims about his conduct around September 11th: (a) a New York Magazine story asserting he was not at the World Trade Center site after the attacks, and (b) reporting attributed to Maggie Haberman that he attended the Pentagon ceremony because he was denied a speaking slot in New York. He attaches archival video — audible in the transcript as a September 2001 street interview in which he says "I have about 100 men working down here" and "I was just down to ground zero" — as documentary proof.
Level 1: Dispositional Traits
- Agreeableness — very low (0.05). The defining feature of the post. The deliberate corruption of a journalist's name ("Maggot Hagerman," repeated three times), the appearance-based attack ("unattractive both inside and out"), and the blanket characterization of the profession ("liars and scoundrels these so-called 'journalists'") are antagonism facets — hostility, immodesty, and contempt — at ceiling.
- Neuroticism — high (0.75), angry-hostility facet. Sustained, escalating aggrieved affect across ~450 words with no de-escalation and no return to the commemorative occasion.
- Extraversion — high (0.75). Assertiveness and dominance-seeking; the post is performative, addressed to an audience ("It's very important to comment so that people understand").
- Conscientiousness — moderate-low (0.35). Notably, deliberation is higher than baseline here: he marshals a named corroborating witness (Calamari), a direct quotation of ceremony policy, and video evidence. This is an unusually evidentiary post by his standards. Order is undermined by the escalation into unrelated grievance ("I won the Presidential Election three times!").
- Openness — low (0.25). Closed to disconfirming information by construction: the press is defined as knowingly lying, so no reporting can be true.
Level 2: Characteristic Adaptations
Agency motives dominate (0.9). Control over the historical record is the object. He is not merely disputing a fact; he is asserting authority to certify what happened ("Everything I said was exactly accurate"; "I hereby demand a retraction"). The imperative "hereby demand" invokes quasi-official power over a private publication — a status claim as much as a request.
Communion is near-absent (0.15) despite the subject matter. This is the psychologically notable feature. The occasion is the 25th anniversary of an event that killed nearly 3,000 people; the first responders, the widows and children fund mentioned in his own 2001 clip, and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation appear only instrumentally, as venue and credential. The dead are the setting; the injured party is himself.
Schemas. Self as truthful and persecuted; others as knowing liars ("even when they know their story is false," "fully knows that her story is made up"); world as a place where accurate accounts must be defended by force of assertion. Crucially, the schema requires opponents to possess the truth and suppress it — error and good-faith disagreement are not available categories.
Level 3: Narrative Identity
- Protagonist role: wronged truth-teller and, secondarily, first-on-the-scene civic actor. The archival clip is deployed to install him inside the 9/11 story as a participant rather than a witness.
- Contrasting other: Maggie Haberman personally, New York Magazine, "the Fake News" collectively.
- Contamination sequence: a solemn commemorative act (Ellipse remarks, steel beam, first responders) is converted into a grievance narrative — "a story that just won't die."
- Identity claims: "I was there as soon as the Law allowed" (law-abiding and eager); "I speak enough" (feigned modesty as status display); "I won the Presidential Election three times" (unbounded electoral legitimacy).
- One genuinely anomalous line: "Well, I don't think I would be the first thing on anyone's mind." This is a momentary, near-self-deprecating concession — rare in the corpus — immediately abandoned. It reads less as modesty than as a preemptive rebuttal of the "nobody saw me there" argument, but the register shift is worth logging longitudinally.
Level 4: Clinical Indicators
Narcissistic dynamics. The trigger is a narcissistic injury of the exposure subtype: a published claim that a self-narrative (presence at Ground Zero) is fabricated. Injuries to self-narrative veracity reliably produce the longest and most detailed responses in this subject, and this post is consistent with that pattern.
State: mixed. Vulnerable elements (persecuted by a press that lies about him; a story that "just won't die") alternate with grandiose compensation within single sentences — the pivot from "their approval ratings are at an All Time LOW" to "but mine are VERY HIGH!" is a textbook injury-to-inflation repair, as is the eruption of "I won the Presidential Election three times!" into a paragraph about a 2001 site visit.
Rage: present, intensity ~0.7, proportionality ~0.35. The disproportion is in the form, not the fact, of the response. A factual dispute over a 2001 visit is legitimate and he has evidence for it; the dehumanizing renaming and physical-appearance attack are categorically outside the dispute and serve dominance rather than correction.
Sadism (ego-syntonic, ~0.5). "Maggot" and "unattractive both inside and out" are gratuitous relative to the argument and are offered to an audience as entertainment. The humiliation is the point, not a byproduct.
Paranoid features (~0.7). "There never is!" (no fact-checking, ever); "Let her reveal her sources, because they don't exist"; the requirement that the reporter knows she is lying. Suspicion is generalized to the profession and treated as established.
Antisocial features (~0.55). The knowing falsehood embedded in "I won the Presidential Election three times," asserted inside a post whose thesis is his own scrupulous accuracy.
Defense Mechanisms
- Devaluation (immature) — the primary defense. The critic is destroyed rather than the criticism answered: name corruption, appearance, competence ("knows less about me than the average reporter 'on the beat'").
- Splitting (immature) — total truthfulness ("Everything I said was exactly accurate") against total mendacity ("liars and scoundrels").
- Projection (immature) — the accusation of fabricating without verification ("certainly there was no 'fact checking'... There never is!") appears in the same post as an unverified sweeping claim about his own approval and a demonstrably false electoral claim.
- Rationalization (neurotic) — the Pentagon explanation is overdetermined, offering three mutually redundant reasons: (1) nobody speaks at the New York ceremony; (2) he never asked to speak; (3) a "strong request" was made for him to be at the Pentagon. This is kettle logic — the accumulation of independent exculpations weakens rather than strengthens the denial and signals that the accusation landed.
- Denial (pathological) — of the documented 2020 election outcome.
Rhetorical & Propaganda Analysis
Devices: epithet-as-name ("Maggot Hagerman"), ad hominem, argumentum ad populum via ratings, appeal to authority through quoted policy text, evidentiary display (video, named witness), imperative demand ("I hereby demand a retraction"), the signature closing formula ("Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP").
Propaganda techniques: firehose-model press delegitimization (volume + blanket attribution of bad faith), poisoning the well (no future reporting from this source can be credited), false dichotomy (accurate me / lying them), and selective evidence framing — the clip is genuinely corroborative of presence downtown in mid-September 2001, and is used to license a much broader claim ("Everything I said was exactly accurate") that the clip cannot establish.
Dehumanizing language: yes. "Maggot" is a literal larval-insect term applied repeatedly to a named private citizen. This is a lower-order instance than "vermin"/"animals" applied to populations, but it is the same rhetorical operation applied to an individual.
Violent imagery: no. Stochastic terrorism: no. There is no mobilization cue, no implied action, no location or schedule. The pattern is target + grievance without the third element.
Danger Assessment — Elevated
Not for violence indicators but for targeted harassment risk: a named journalist, identified by a dehumanizing epithet, attacked on appearance, with an explicit demand that she expose confidential sources ("Let her reveal her sources"), broadcast by a head of state to a large aligned audience on the eve of a high-salience anniversary. The source-disclosure demand is the most consequential line in the post — it converts a personal grievance into pressure on a professional protection that has legal and physical-safety implications for third parties.
Cognitive Status
Syntax is complex and largely well-formed; the ceremony-policy quotation is deployed correctly; the argument, while defended redundantly, is followable start to finish. Complexity is at or slightly above recent baseline for this subject, likely reflecting genuine engagement and possible preparation for the Ellipse remarks earlier the same day.
One marker: "Hagerman" for Haberman, used consistently rather than once. Given that "Maggot Haberman" is a long-established coinage of his, the substitution of a wrong surname is more likely a mild name/phoneme error than a fresh insult, but consistency within the post makes deliberate corruption possible. Logged as mild; not diagnostic in isolation. Longitudinal check recommended: whether "Hagerman" recurs in later posts would distinguish stable error from transient slip.
Mild perseveration on the grievance theme is present (the same denial restated three times in the closing third), which is characteristic rather than deviant for this subject under injury.
Trajectory: stable. No marked deviation from baseline.
Longitudinal Note
The preceding 24 hours show a consistent pattern: an attack on Kaitlan Collins and CNN ("all FICTION AND LIES"), convention promotion, and now this. Press-delegitimization posts are clustering ahead of the Dallas convention and the 9/11 anniversary — consistent with pre-event supply-seeking and preemptive framing rather than with an isolated reaction.
Confidence
- Authorship (authentic): high
- Trigger classification (narcissistic injury / exposure): high
- Defense identification: high
- Sadism scoring: medium (rests on the gratuitousness judgment)
- Cognitive marker ("Hagerman"): low — deliberate-vs-error is unresolved from a single post

Grokipedia's page on Calamari was reviewed and discarded as a source: it attributes to him a Bloomberg quote that does not appear in the Bloomberg text. | | "A 'strong request' was made for him to attend the Pentagon ceremony rather than the New York ceremony, with Vice President Vance representing the administration in New York." | Mostly False | The claim has two parts.

Post from Truth Social
The Failing New York Magazine wrote a story that I wasn’t down at the World Trade Center after the Tragedy of September 11th, because nobody saw me there. Well, I don’t think I would be the first thing on anyone’s mind but, I was there, obviously not on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter, with a large group of Construction Workers. I discussed it today during my Remarks on the Ellipse, in Washington, D.C., for Tunnel to Towers. Everything I said was exactly accurate and, to prove the point, I am attaching clips of me there with numerous of my people, including my then Head of Security, Matthew Calamari, who has confirmed that very sad trip to Lower Manhattan, many times, to many different Journalists, but it’s a story that just won’t die. The Fake News doesn’t want to listen, even when they know their story is false. That’s why their approval ratings are at an All Time LOW, but mine are VERY HIGH! On another September 11th front, Maggot Hagerman continues to say that I did not go to the New York World Trade Center event, but the Pentagon instead, because they wouldn’t let me speak in New York. Maggot knows that this is a lie! I have been to the New York solemn ceremony numerous times, and nobody speaks. It is a stated fact that, “Politicians and public officials are not permitted to deliver speeches or remarks at the official September 11 anniversary remembrance ceremony at the World Trade Center site in New York.” Certainly I would not want to violate that, even if I could. I speak enough, and it just so happens that the strong request was made for me to be at the Pentagon instead, with VP Vance handling our Administration’s representation in New York. Hagerman, unattractive both inside and out, fully knows that her story is made up. She knows less about me than the average reporter “on the beat.” I haven’t spoken to her in a long time, and certainly there was no “fact checking” for her story — There never is! Let her reveal her sources, because they don’t exist. Again, speeches are not made at the New York event and, even if they were, I never asked to speak. Fake News is getting worse and worse in the U.S.A. It’s very important to comment so that people understand what liars and scoundrels these so-called “journalists” are. They’re angry, and sick, over the fact that I won the Presidential Election three times! I hereby demand a retraction from Maggot, and also, for whoever wrote the fake story for New York Magazine. Again, check out the clips of me at the World Trade Center site. I was there as soon as the Law allowed. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP
