Fact Verification

The 'fixing their car' description is the misleading part and has been directly fact-checked. FactCheck.org ('Trump's Inaccurate Anecdote on Right to Repair Cars,' June 2026) examined Trump's related claim and rated it inaccurate, concluding these defendants were not prosecuted for 'simply fixing' a personal vehicle. The paradigm case, Wyoming mechanic Troy Lake (pardoned separately in November 2025), ran Elite Diesel Service and directed employees to disable the computerized on-board diagnostic (OBD) emissions systems on at least 344 heavy-duty commercial trucks, producing more than 1,300 tons of excess nitrogen oxides. Trump publicly claimed Lake got 'seven years in jail'; in reality Lake served seven months of a one-year sentence. Another figure in this cluster, Michigan mechanic Ryan LaLone of Diesel Freak, 'deleted' emissions software on hundreds of trucks and received probation plus a $750,000 corporate fine — probation, not prison. These were commercial operations disabling federally required emissions equipment on large numbers of vehicles, which is illegal under Title II of the Clean Air Act (the anti-tampering and defeat-device prohibitions), not routine auto repair.
