I'm a 960 SAT guy... You've never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech." The clip went viral with 35+ million views.

Some Black voices did criticize the remarks: Nicki Minaj (an outspoken Trump supporter) wrote that Newsom's "way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can't read." Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) called it the "bigotry of low expectations." Corrin Rankin, the first Black chair of the California GOP, said Newsom "continues to speak down to Black people." Progressive Black figures Nina Turner and Cornel West also criticized Newsom. Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross said she was "kind of bothered by the way that he said it."

However, significant Black voices pushed back on the racism framing: Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, the Black official on stage with Newsom, defended him, saying "context matters more than a headline" and "This is Atlanta. The criticism was primarily driven by conservatives, not the Black community at large. The most vocal Black critics (Minaj, Scott, Rankin) are all aligned with Trump or the Republican Party. Newsom's office characterized the backlash as "MAGA-manufactured outrage," noting he has discussed his dyslexia and low SAT scores with many audiences for years, including in a previous interview with the late Charlie Kirk. Newsweek verified that the audience was racially mixed, contrary to social media claims that it was all-Black.

Shaun Harper of Inside Higher Ed noted that outrage "emerged in the absence of actual data about who was in the audience" and that voices of actual Black attendees were notably absent from the backlash.

Separately, Newsom has faced genuine frustration from Black activists over his vetoing of five reparations bills in 2025, which is a more substantive racial grievance, but this is not what Trump's post references.

On polling, Black voters show lower support for Newsom (14%) compared to Kamala Harris (34%) in 2028 Democratic primary polls, but this reflects preference, not racial anger.
