Post from Truth Social

I have just finished meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, of Israel, and various of his Representatives. It was a very good meeting, the tremendous relationship between our two Countries continues. There was nothing definitive reached other than I insisted that negotiations with Iran continue to see whether or not a Deal can be consummated. If it can, I let the Prime Minister know that will be a preference. If it cannot, we will just have to see what the outcome will be. Last time Iran decided that they were better off not making a Deal, and they were hit with Midnight Hammer — That did not work well for them. Hopefully this time they will be more reasonable and responsible. Additionally, we discussed the tremendous progress being made in Gaza, and the Region in general. There is truly PEACE in the Middle East. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

Fact Checks (2)
"There is truly PEACE in the Middle East"
Mostly False

While a Gaza ceasefire was in effect by early 2026, the broader Middle East remained volatile with ongoing conflicts and tensions in multiple theaters. 'PEACE' is a significant overstatement.

"Last time Iran decided not to make a Deal, they were hit with Midnight Hammer"
Half True

Operation Midnight Hammer is real, and Iran did reject US deal terms before it occurred -- but Trump's cause-and-effect framing is misleading.

What is factually accurate: Operation Midnight Hammer took place on June 22, 2025, when seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and a guided missile submarine struck three Iranian nuclear facilities (Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan) with 14 bunker-buster bombs and over two dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles. It involved over 125 US aircraft total. Multiple rounds of US-Iran negotiations occurred from April through early June 2025, led by envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi. Iran did reject key US demands: on June 4, 2025, Khamenei explicitly rejected the US proposal demanding zero enrichment, calling it 'excessive and outrageous.' Witkoff later stated they 'were repeatedly rebuffed on everything we asked for' and that Iran's regime had 'not given their negotiating team authority to make a deal.'

What is misleading about the causal framing: Trump presents a simple cause-and-effect (Iran refused a deal, so they got hit). The actual sequence is more complex. Israel initiated the Twelve-Day War on June 13, 2025, with Operation Rising Lion -- massive strikes using 200+ fighter jets on roughly 100 targets in Iran. The US joined the conflict nine days later with Midnight Hammer on June 22. The ceasefire came on June 24. Defense Secretary Hegseth justified the strikes as neutralizing 'threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally, Israel' -- not as punishment for refusing a deal. Breaking Defense's detailed account of the operation made no connection to failed negotiations as a stated justification.

Further complicating Trump's framing: an academic analysis from the University of Denver noted that US strikes occurred while 'representatives were in talks with Iran over that country's ability to produce nuclear weapons,' and that for the later 2026 Operation Epic Fury, Iran had actually agreed to substantial concessions the day before strikes commenced. PBS and CNN fact-checks documented multiple misleading Trump claims about Iran, including exaggerating the damage ('obliterated' vs. 'significantly degraded' per the White House's own November 2025 assessment).

In summary: the core facts (Midnight Hammer happened; Iran rejected deal terms) are true. But the narrative that Iran's deal refusal directly caused or justified Midnight Hammer omits that Israel started the war, that the US joined an already-active conflict, and that the official military justification was collective self-defense rather than deal punishment. This is Trump's retrospective narrative construction, not a straightforward factual account.
