Post from Truth Social

Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. I have watched, as has the World, as they have done nothing but come after him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year! He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE. I have gotten to know Jair Bolsonaro, and he was a strong Leader, who truly loved his Country — Also, a very tough negotiator on TRADE. His Election was very close and now, he is leading in the Polls. This is nothing more, or less, than an attack on a Political Opponent — Something I know much about! It happened to me, times 10, and now our Country is the “HOTTEST” in the World! The Great People of Brazil will not stand for what they are doing to their former President. I’ll be watching the WITCH HUNT of Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and thousands of his supporters, very closely. The only Trial that should be happening is a Trial by the Voters of Brazil — It’s called an Election. LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!

Trump's defense of Bolsonaro functions primarily as projective identification — mapping his own persecution narrative onto an international ally to reinforce its legitimacy. The post erases Bolsonaro's indictment for attempted coup d'état, asserting he is "not guilty of anything." Most psychologically revealing is the competitive victimhood: even while expressing solidarity, Trump insists his own suffering was "times 10" greater, demonstrating the narcissistic filter through which empathy is processed. The closing imperative and "watching closely" language carries implicit coercive weight given Trump's position as US President, effectively pressuring a foreign judiciary. The post normalizes framing coup-related prosecutions as political persecution, with elevated danger implications for democratic norms both domestically and internationally.

  • Implicit claim that elections should override judicial accountability
Fact Checks (3)
"Bolsonaro is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE"
False

Bolsonaro was indicted in November 2024 by Brazil's Federal Police for attempted coup d'état related to the January 8, 2023 storming of government buildings. He faces charges of criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic state, and attempted coup.

"His Election was very close and now, he is leading in the Polls"
Mostly True

Bolsonaro lost to Lula 50.9%-49.1% in 2022 runoff (close). Polling in mid-2025 showed Bolsonaro competitive or leading in hypothetical matchups, though he is currently barred from running until 2030.

"It happened to me, times 10"
Unverifiable

Subjective comparative claim about degree of political persecution. Not falsifiable.

Daily Digest A Quiet Presidential Monday: Tariff Decrees, Bolsonaro Projection, and Conspicuous Silence on Texas Floods

A low-key day dominated by formal announcements and governance messaging. The evening before featured two staff-crafted tariff declarations, and the workday brought a defense of Brazil's Bolsonaro that doubled as a mirror for Trump's own persecution narrative.
