Post from Truth Social

Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!

A provincial electricity export surcharge by Ontario triggers a response that escalates within a single post to a proposal for Canadian annexation — a proportionality failure of diagnostic significance. The grandiose narcissistic pole is at near-maximum expression: Trump deploys the full apparatus of executive power (tariff escalation, National Emergency authority, industry elimination threats) as intermediate steps toward absorbing a G7 democracy of 38 million people. DARVO dynamics are prominent and structurally complete: Canada's retaliatory surcharge is recast as unprovoked "abusive threat" while the initiating US tariff actions on Canadian steel and aluminum are erased. Defense mechanisms range from pathological (reality distortion about Canada's tariff regime) to immature (projection of aggression, splitting). The post's rhetorical sophistication — building from verifiable specific grievance to extraordinary conclusion via seemingly logical escalation — distinguishes it from disorganized rage. The faux-benevolent close (anthem will continue, taxes will drop) represents the characteristic Trump oscillation between threat and beneficence. Multiple fact claims are materially false or distorted. Danger assessment is elevated due to eliminationist economic framing targeting an allied democracy; no individual violence indicators present. Cognitive status shows no deterioration markers. Post is contextually significant as one of several high-intensity posts published the same day as the Hegseth Signal chat leak — a convergence of stress indicators worth tracking longitudinally.

Danger Assessment

Elevated

Indicators:
  • Eliminationist economic rhetoric: explicit goal to 'essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada'
  • National Emergency declaration threat on electricity infrastructure of allied nation
  • Sovereignty-erasure framing directed at a G7 democracy with 38 million citizens
  • Escalation pattern: multiple simultaneous economic pressure instruments deployed against single ally
  • Post published during period of simultaneous military crises (Ukraine ceasefire, Signal chat leak) — distraction risk
  • No individual targeting or incitement to interpersonal violence; does not meet stochastic terrorism threshold
Gaslighting Detected:
  • DARVO: Ontario's surcharge (a retaliatory measure responding to prior US tariff actions on Canadian steel/aluminum) recast as unprovoked 'abusive threat' — originating US actions erased
  • Sovereignty erasure: Canadian trade policy implicitly requires US permission ('your not even allowed to do that' in prior post)
  • Reality reversal: Framing US tariff escalation as defensive response to Canadian aggression
  • Rapid revisionism: Trump had already exempted USMCA auto imports through April 2 (per known events); the car tariff threat obscures this recent exemption
Reality Distortions:
  • Canada characterized as one of world's highest-tariff nations based on selective dairy figures
  • $200 billion annual subsidy claim without supporting methodology
  • Selective dairy tariffs presented as characterizing entire bilateral trade relationship
  • Ontario provincial electricity surcharge attributed to 'Canada' as national policy
  • Annexation framed as mutual benefit rather than elimination of Canadian sovereignty
  • US tariff escalation chain that preceded Ontario surcharge erased from causal sequence
Fact Checks (6)
"Ontario placing a 25% Tariff on Electricity coming into the United States"
True

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports specifically targeting Michigan, New York, and Minnesota in response to US tariff actions on Canadian goods.

"Canada is ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD"
Mostly False

Canada's trade-weighted mean applied tariff rate is approximately 3-4%, comparable to the US and significantly lower than most developing and emerging economies including India (~17%), Brazil (~11%), and Argentina (~14%). High above-quota dairy tariffs exist within a supply management system but do not characterize Canada's overall tariff regime.

"Canada charges 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products"
Mostly True

Canada's supply management system uses tariff-rate quotas; above-quota dairy tariffs do reach these figures. Within-quota volumes face much lower tariffs. The framing omits the quota structure and that this system is acknowledged in USMCA.

"Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection"
Half True

Canada's NATO defense spending (~1.3% GDP in 2025) is below the 2% target, a legitimate NATO burden-sharing debate. However, Canada contributes substantially to NORAD, continental defense, and Five Eyes intelligence. Framing Canada as a free-rider who contributes nothing is significantly overstated.

"We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year"
Mostly False

No credible independent economic analysis supports this figure. US-Canada bilateral trade totals ~$750B/year with the US running a goods deficit but services surplus. Even generous estimates of US defense spending that incidentally benefits Canada are well below this figure. The calculation method behind the $200B claim has not been publicly disclosed.

"Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products"
Half True

The tariff figures are accurate for above-quota dairy imports, but characterizing them as 'Anti-American' obscures that Canada's supply management predates USMCA and that within-quota access was expanded under the agreement. The demand ignores Canada's domestic agricultural policy context.
