Post from Truth Social

It is great to see that the Department of Justice has dropped the Witch Hunt against former Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, a longtime proud and highly respected American public servant. Jeff and his family were forced to suffer greatly due to the illegal Weaponization of our Justice System by the Radical Left Democrats. Jeff’s “case” was originally overturned by the Ninth Circuit, but the “persecutors” would not leave it alone and, shockingly,  indicted him again in Washington, D.C. The charges were totally baseless. That Scam is now over, so Jeff and his family can go back to having a great life together, and be a part of our Country’s future as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. I am very proud of our Department of Justice, something I have not been able to say for many years!

This post demonstrates a textbook projection sequence: Trump accuses the prior DOJ of "illegal Weaponization" — using prosecutorial power for political ends — while celebrating an act that is definitionally the behavior complained of (DOJ dropping charges against a political ally at presidential behest). The post is clinically notable for three features. First, the possessive absorption of DOJ ("our Department of Justice") reflects narcissistic institutional merger — the constitutional body becomes an extension of the self, valued only instrumentally. Second, the characterization of Fortenberry's charges as "totally baseless" constitutes deliberate reality distortion: he was convicted by a jury for lying to FBI investigators; the 9th Circuit reversal was procedural (venue), not an exoneration on merit. Third, the idealization-devaluation split is in full display — DOJ transitions from years of denunciation to pride in a single post, contingent entirely on demonstrated loyalty. The closing "I am very proud of our Department of Justice, something I have not been able to say for many years" is the most diagnostically significant line: it signals to DOJ personnel that institutional virtue is now measured by fidelity to Trump's preferences. The post is in grandiose rather than vulnerable narcissistic state — this is a victory lap. Danger is elevated at the institutional level: the rhetoric normalizes the framework that any prosecution of Trump allies constitutes "illegal Weaponization," providing preemptive ideological cover against future legitimate enforcement.

Indicators:
  • Business hours post (1:22 PM EST at Mar-a-Lago/Doral during House GOP retreat) suggests possible aide involvement
  • Contains highly characteristic Trump lexical markers: 'Witch Hunt,' 'Weaponization,' 'Radical Left Democrats,' 'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN'
  • Scare quotes around 'case' and 'persecutors' — a Trump rhetorical signature
  • Possessive 'our Department of Justice' is an authentic Trump ownership claim pattern
  • Structure is slightly more coherent than raw Trump stream-of-consciousness, suggesting light aide polish

Danger Assessment

Elevated

Indicators:
  • Normalization of DOJ subordination to presidential will as virtue
  • Preemptive delegitimization of future prosecutions of political allies ('illegal Weaponization' framing)
  • Signals to DOJ personnel that institutional loyalty = loyalty to Trump preferences
  • Criminalization of prior prosecutors ('persecutors') chills future legitimate enforcement
Gaslighting Detected:
  • 'Charges were totally baseless' — directly contradicts jury conviction record (9th Circuit reversal was on venue grounds, not merit)
  • 'illegal Weaponization' — characterizes standard federal prosecution for lying to investigators as criminal conspiracy
  • DARVO inversion: convicted party (Fortenberry) recast as victim; prosecutors recast as criminals ('persecutors')
  • Systematic lexical substitution: 'case' → 'case' (scare quotes), 'prosecutors' → 'persecutors'
Reality Distortions:
  • Jury conviction for lying to FBI characterized as 'totally baseless charges'
  • Venue-based procedural reversal by 9th Circuit presented as full exoneration on merits
  • Standard federal prosecution characterized as 'illegal Weaponization' by political opponents
  • DOJ institutional independence erased; department reframed as tribal property ('our Department of Justice')
Fact Checks (4)
"Jeff's case was originally overturned by the Ninth Circuit"
True

The 9th Circuit did overturn Fortenberry's conviction in 2023, finding the case was improperly tried in California rather than Nebraska where the relevant conduct occurred.

"The charges were totally baseless"
False

Fortenberry was convicted by a federal jury on three counts of lying to federal investigators about illegal foreign campaign contributions from Gilbert Chagoury, a Nigerian billionaire. The 9th Circuit reversal was on venue grounds (wrong jurisdiction), not on the merits of the underlying conduct. Characterizing this as 'totally baseless' directly misrepresents the legal record.

"indicted him again in Washington, D.C."
True

After the 9th Circuit venue reversal, federal prosecutors re-indicted Fortenberry in the District of Columbia, the appropriate venue for the conduct.

"illegal Weaponization of our Justice System by the Radical Left Democrats"
Mostly False

The prosecution was initiated through standard federal law enforcement channels for documented lying to FBI investigators. There is no public evidence of improper political direction of the case. The 'illegal' characterization has no legal basis — the prosecution was legitimate even if the venue was improper.
