Post from Truth Social

I turned down a deal with Russia for a one on one swap of the so-called Merchant of Death for Paul Whelan. I wouldn’t have made the deal for a hundred people in exchange for someone that has killed untold numbers of people with his arms deals. I would have gotten Paul out, however, just as I did with a record number of other hostages. The deal for Griner is crazy and bad. The taking wouldn’t have even happened during my Administration, but if it did, I would have gotten her out , fast!

Fact Checks (3)
"Trump turned down a one-for-one swap of Viktor Bout for Paul Whelan"
Mostly True

Reports indicate the Trump administration was offered a Bout-for-Whelan swap but did not pursue it, though framing it as Trump personally 'turning it down' oversimplifies the diplomatic process.

"Trump secured release of a 'record number' of hostages"
Mostly True

Trump administration did secure release of numerous hostages/detainees (over 50 claimed), though 'record' is difficult to verify precisely across administrations.

"The taking wouldn't have happened during my Administration"
Unverifiable

Griner was detained in February 2022 under Biden. Counterfactual claim about deterrence cannot be tested.
