A ledger of national harms with two personal grievances filed among them

On a Saturday morning, three days before the November 3 midterms, Trump published an image with no caption. Under the heading "Life Before Obama" it runs eight checkbox lines, each beginning "There was no". Six name movements, threats or policies: "ISIS," "Black Lives Matter," "ANTIFA," a "War On Police," a "Law Legalizing Propoganda on American Citizens," and "expensive Obamacare." The other two name injuries to Trump: "Russia Hoax" and "TDS." Publishing it puts a federal counterintelligence investigation of his campaign, and other people's reaction to him, on the same list as a terrorist army. Those two lines are the part of the post that says something about him in particular. The rest is a stock partisan meme.

"TDS" is the clearest case. The term describes how people respond to Trump, so it could not have existed under any president before he entered politics in 2015. Filing it under "Life Before Obama" relocates the source of hostility toward Trump from Trump to his predecessor. That is displacement: the grievance stays and the blame moves to a figure he has treated as a contrasting other since the birther claims of 2011. "Russia Hoax" fits the same pattern. In 2025 he accused Obama of treason over the 2017 intelligence assessment on Russian interference and shared an AI video of Obama being arrested. This meme carries that charge in compressed form, with Obama as the author of the investigation Trump experienced as persecution. The narrative is a contamination sequence: an unspoiled "before," then a single man's tenure spoiling it. Trump appears nowhere in the frame except as the injured party named in the last two lines.

Splitting runs through the format. Every item in the list sits on the Obama side of a clean before/after line, and the picture of Obama with a raised index finger, mid-lecture, casts him as the scold who brought the trouble. The mockery is contemptuous rather than enraged. No line escalates, and the anaphora ("There was no" eight times) gives it a chant-like rhythm suited to sharing.

What the meme asserts, which he left uncaptioned

These claims belong to the image's maker. Trump vouched for them only by posting, so they are assessed here and not entered as his statements.

• "There was no ISIS": the group descends from al-Qaeda in Iraq (2004) and declared itself the Islamic State of Iraq in October 2006, under Bush. Its 2013–14 expansion into Syria and its caliphate declaration came under Obama.
• "There was no Black Lives Matter": accurate. The movement began in 2013.
• "There was no ANTIFA": American anti-fascist networks such as Anti-Racist Action date to the late 1980s.
• The "propaganda" line points to the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, enacted in the FY2013 NDAA that Obama signed. It let State Department and U.S. international-broadcasting material be made available domestically. It did not authorize campaigns directed at Americans, which is how the meme frames it.
• "Russia Hoax": the Mueller report and the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee both documented Russian interference in 2016.

Structurally, the list is post hoc reasoning. Anything that surfaced during a presidency is treated as that president's creation. The gray checkboxes give eight assertions the look of a verified audit.

The ISIS grouping

Black Lives Matter and antifa share a list with ISIS. Coming from an administration that designated antifa a domestic terrorist organization in September 2025, that equivalence has consequences for policy and not only rhetoric. The meme names no individual other than Obama, uses no dehumanizing noun and calls for no action, so the risk lies in normalizing the terror framing of domestic protest movements. It does not mobilize against a target.

Timing and who chose it

The post went up at 10:33 a.m. Eastern. Daylight time ran until November 1, so 14:33 UTC is 10:33 EDT, whether he was in Washington or Palm Beach. That falls inside business hours. The same morning brought several other media-only posts and a short line attacking a "Reuters (One of the Worst!) Reporter," which matches the bursts of meme reposting he has long done himself. Stylometry offers nothing, because the only words are the image's, including its misspelled "Propoganda." There is no language of his own here to measure for cognitive change. With the midterms days away and the previous day's post a Texas slate of endorsements, the timing fits pre-election base maintenance more than a reaction to a fresh injury.
