A midnight answer to Obama's Detroit rally

Barack Obama was scheduled to appear with Abdul El-Sayed and Jocelyn Benson in Detroit on October 24, eleven days before the election. The post went up at 04:42 UTC, which is 12:42 a.m. Eastern. That is the zone he would be in whether he was at the White House or Mar-a-Lago, and it is a few hours after the rally's evening slot. The post reads as a reply to that event. It opens on Obama ("grossly incompetent President!") before it says a word about Michigan, so the first target is the man campaigning, and the candidate comes second. It belongs to a late-night run of midterm posts that also covers Lisa Murkowski and Jon Husted. Each one follows the same plan: a list of the other side's failures, his own record, then an endorsement.

The way the post is built suggests he wrote it himself. It drifts in three stages: Obama's record, then El-Sayed, then "I won Michigan, BIG". The middle of that last stage brags about Trump himself, and only after it does the endorsement arrive. The clauses are loose ("and he is going to lose, also"; "lost in all directions and ways"). The base is left unnamed as "the Air Force Base". Capitals rise with the emotion ("WORST CLINIC IN AMERICA", "VOTE FOR MIKE ROGERS!"), and there is a stray double space after "she lost." A staffer would have named Selfridge and probably cut the claim that El-Sayed hates "TRUMP".

Obama as the recurring rival

The first half lists Obama's defeats: Clinton "lost in all directions and ways", Harris "likewise, she lost", and El-Sayed "is going to lose, also." Here Trump measures himself against Obama by counting Obama's surrogate losses. The outcomes Trump himself won are recast as Obama's failures. It is a contamination sequence told about someone else, and Trump's own story stays a redemption arc ("have brought back the Car Industry"). In "all directions and ways" he pushes the 2016 result further than it went: Clinton lost the Electoral College and won the popular vote. That is distortion in the defensive sense. A partial win is restated as a total loss because the total version fits the story better. Trump is also preempting the comparison. Obama drawing crowds in Detroit days before the election gives a rival a chance to claim credit, and the post denies that chance before the result exists.

The smear against El-Sayed

The attack on the candidate is the most intense passage, and the most dangerous one. "A Muslim Brotherhood Jihadist, who hates Jews and Blacks and AMERICANS and TRUMP" attaches a terrorism label to the religious identity of a major-party Senate nominee. It offers no evidence and nothing he has said. "Jihadist" is the anchor word, and it comes back near the end ("arrogant, Open Borders, Fake Doctor, Jihadist"). The repetition turns it into an epithet rather than a description. The list of groups El-Sayed supposedly hates is meant to set Black and Jewish voters, two blocs Democrats need in Michigan, against him. Putting "TRUMP" at the end of a list of peoples is the clearest sign of self-object merger in the post: hating Trump is ranked with hating Americans. The device is splitting: El-Sayed is all bad, Rogers "will never let you down!" There is projection in "arrogant", a word that sits oddly beside "I won Michigan, BIG."

The danger rests on the label, not on any instruction. The post names a target and gives grievances (religion recast as terrorism, hatred of named groups). The only action it asks for is "VOTE FOR MIKE ROGERS!" The line "his reputation will only get worse as more information is revealed - And there's plenty" hints at damaging material without producing any, which keeps the target in view for followers. Calling a Muslim candidate a jihadist puts him in a category that, in public discourse, invites hostility toward his person and not just his politics. No call to mobilize or act is present. That is why the post falls short of a stochastic pattern while still carrying elevated risk.

The credential attack and a possible garble

"Fake Doctor" draws on a real dispute from the primary. El-Sayed holds an MD from Columbia and an Oxford DPhil, and Politico reported that he has never held a medical license in Michigan or New York. He is a credentialed doctor who never practiced as a licensed physician. That makes "fake" an exaggeration with a factual seed. "Runs what is considered to be the WORST CLINIC IN AMERICA" has no basis in anything found: there is no record of El-Sayed running a clinic. The nearest source is his own 2022 joke about being "the worst doctor on the team" during a sub-internship. The phrase may be that line, or the licensing story, turned into an institutional claim. The vague attribution "considered to be" is his usual way of passing off an assertion as consensus. One unsourced fusion like this is ordinary for his attack rhetoric, and it does not show a cognitive change. It would matter only if similar fabricated specifics about real people became more frequent.

The Michigan record

"I won Michigan, BIG" overstates a margin of about 1.4 points in 2024. "Brought back the Car Industry" and "more jobs than ever before" are the round, unsourced boasts he favors. Michigan's labor market weakened through 2025, and auto employment did not return in the way he claims. "The Air Force Base" refers to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which the administration gave a new F-15EX fighter mission in 2025 after its A-10s were retired. That is a real deliverable, offered without its name.

Defenses and archetype

Trump plays the King restoring order to Michigan: car industry, base, jobs. Shadow material is pushed onto the rival: arrogance, foreignness ("Open Borders"), fraud ("Fake Doctor"). The post builds no grievance against Trump himself. The state is grandiose, with the wound contained in Obama's visibility. Rage is moderate and comes out as contempt, not as a sense of persecution.
