A dead statesman's endorsement, reposted at dawn

The post is a screenshot of an X post from the account "GRANDPA's FREE ADVICE" (@GOP_is_Gutless), with no words added. The screenshot quotes Henry Kissinger calling Trump "the only true leader," saying "There's nothing wrong with him and people need to open their eyes," and adding "After eight years of tyranny, we finally see a difference." A 13-item populist wish list follows, then the line "Trump is the only one speaking to this. We the people are coming." What he did was choose to publish this and put a praise text he didn't write in front of his own audience.

What the image claims, and where it comes from. Kissinger died in November 2023, so these lines can't be a fresh endorsement. The first clause, "a phenomenon foreign countries have not seen before," closely matches something Kissinger said on CBS in December 2016. The rest of the passage, including "the only true leader," "eight years of tyranny," and "nothing wrong with him," appears in no known Kissinger interview or writing. It has the shape of the meme that has circulated since 2017, which grafts partisan lines onto one real remark. On the record, Kissinger's view of Trump was ambivalent. His best-known assessment, given to the Financial Times in 2018, cast Trump as a figure who "marks the end of an era," and that is not an endorsement. The wish list is an old chain-email genre. Its "Hillary held accountable" and "after Obama's withdrawal" belong to the 2017 news cycle, not to October 2026. None of this is Trump's own assertion, so nothing is fact-checked as his claim. What the repost does is lend a famous name to text with no source behind it.

Why this, why now. The likeliest driver is supply-seeking. The week's events include a Washington Post-ABC-Ipsos poll putting approval at a record-low 33%, nationwide "No Kings" protests, a bipartisan backlash over waiving Russia sanctions, and a press secretary who resigned within days. The repost answers those pressures from outside: an elder statesman, now dead and unable to object, rules that "There's nothing wrong with him." That line is a defensive rebuttal, not plain praise. It assumes an audience that thinks something is wrong with him and tells them to "open their eyes." Picking the line that speaks to his fitness, on an 80-year-old's early-morning feed, fits a vulnerable-to-grandiose regulation pattern: outside doubt about him is answered with borrowed authority, not his own argument. The confidence on that motive is medium. Nothing in the post shows he read the text closely, as opposed to taking in the headline and the photos.

Defenses on display. Idealization works in two directions. The source is idealized ("Kissinger"), and the subject is idealized through him ("the only true leader," "does everything for the good of the people"). Splitting sits in the framing of the Obama years as "eight years of tyranny" against a present where "we finally see a difference." That framing is nine years stale and ignores both his own first term and the Biden years. There is no rage. The post's emotional register is self-soothing.

Rhetoric he amplified. The image runs on appeal to authority (a famous strategist's name with no citation), superlatives ("only true leader," "like never before"), and a populist checklist that claims to speak for everyone ("What Americans actually want"). The closer, "We the people are coming," is a vague mobilization line. Read next to "Hillary held accountable," it echoes the prosecution-of-opponents theme from the same week, when the administration threatened to jail election workers. Here, though, it comes from a stale chain list and points at no current target, action, or date. It goes no further than generic rally rhetoric.

Who chose it. The post went up at 10:17 UTC, which is 6:17 a.m. Eastern. That is the morning after the scheduled Clemson, South Carolina rally, so he was most likely back in Washington. The source is a small partisan X account, screenshotted a day after it was posted. Early-morning reposts of fan-made praise from fringe accounts are a recurring personal habit. It also fits that the same day's feed has other media-only posts beside more polished messages that read like an aide's work (the Apple titanium announcement, the Klavan book plug). With no written text, this attribution is only about who picked the image.

Cognition. None of the words are his, so this post gives no language sample. The only cognitive question is about selection. Publishing a text that treats 2026 as following "eight years" of Obama rule doesn't show temporal confusion on his part, because the anachronism belongs to the meme's author. It does show that the framing either wasn't checked or didn't matter once the content was flattering.

Longitudinal note. Fabricated or recycled endorsements from dead or absent authorities are an established category in this archive. It is worth comparing how often these reposts appear in weeks of bad polling against calmer weeks, because that is the cleanest behavioral test of the supply-seeking reading.
