A long feud, carried on by someone else's drawing

The image is a caricature of Rosie O'Donnell, and nothing about it is ambiguous. The name "Rosie" is signed on the letter, and it shows the wild gray-black hair and heavy black glasses that her caricatures always use. The Irish décor ("GALWAY THIS WAY," a Guinness pint, a leprechaun hat, "IRELAND IS MY HAPPY PLACE") points to her 2025 move to Ireland, which she said was prompted by Trump's return to office. Trump added no words of his own, so what he did here was choose to publish it.

The meme has one joke. It turns a critic into an admirer who can't let go. She wears a shirt reading "TDS forever," a thought bubble says "my dearest Donald," and her letter reads "Dear President Trump, You're truly one of a kind! XOXO, Rosie ♡." The heart-topped cookies and the chin-on-hand pose make it a lovesick-schoolgirl scene. Her hostility toward him is recast as romantic fixation, and her emigration becomes a sulk over a man she can't stop writing to.

What publishing it does

Projection. The feud dates to 2006 and has been kept going mostly from Trump's side. In July 2025 he said he was considering revoking her citizenship. A post that shows her as unable to stop thinking about him hands the fixation to the other party. The best evidence of whose preoccupation this is comes from the act itself: nothing in the provided events suggests she had just done anything, yet on a Sunday afternoon he went back to a target he has attacked for twenty years.

Supply by inversion. The letter's compliment, "You're truly one of a kind!", is flattery of Trump spoken through an enemy. Showing an opponent as secretly devoted gives him admiration and a put-down in the same frame. Opposition gets explained as unrequited attachment, which is the self-flattering way to read it.

Devaluation and mild sadism. Mockery of her appearance runs through the caricature ("wild gray/black hair"). Stock drinking jokes ("IT'S NOT A SIP, IT'S A LIFESTYLE") are attached to her new country. This is ridicule meant to make her look small and silly, not a threat. The pleasure is in humiliating her, and that fits the playful-cruel register of his long history of insulting O'Donnell's looks.

Pathologizing dissent. "TDS forever" uses the "Trump Derangement Syndrome" idea: criticism of him is a clinical condition, not a position. That keeps the in-group sealed off, because a critic is sick or smitten and in neither case needs an answer.

Context and state

This was one of at least six posts on 26 July. It came a day after the rescheduled Correspondents' Dinner, where he gave what reports described as an insult-heavy speech aimed at journalists and opponents. It also fell during a week when he was weighing a larger strike on Iran and had attended a dignified transfer for four soldiers. Against that week, a lighthearted jab at an old celebrity rival looks like upkeep with his audience, or a retreat into familiar grievance, more than a reaction to some new injury. The tone is grandiose and relaxed. There is no sign of a wounded or aggrieved state.

In archetype terms this is the Trickster using ridicule, with O'Donnell cast as the Shadow figure who carries the obsession and emotional excess he disowns. The status move is simple: she drops from critic to pining fan, and he rises to the object of her devotion.

Limits

The meme names no action, carries no dehumanizing language, and points at no one who could be reached. O'Donnell is abroad, and the image frames her as silly, not dangerous. The earlier talk of revoking her citizenship is the only thing that gives this line of attack teeth, and this image doesn't bring it up. The image makes no factual claims he stated himself, so there is nothing to fact-check. With no text, there is nothing to measure for language or cognition.

A Sunday-afternoon slot fits either personal posting or staff posting. The attribution concerns who chose the meme, and the timing alone can't settle it.
