A Stephen Moore gas-price chart, reposted without comment on a Bedminster Sunday

The post is one screenshot with nothing written by Trump. It shows an Unleash Prosperity bar chart, "Average Real Gas Price by Administration," framed as "From Stephen Moore" and captioned "Shows gas prices on average lower under Trump than Biden and Obama." The bars read Obama $4.30, Trump 1 $3.25, Biden $3.88, Trump 2 $3.32, all in April 2026 dollars. Since he added no words, the only behavior to read is his choice to amplify this particular piece of economic scorekeeping, made by a longtime ally, at this particular moment.

What the chart claims, and where it is soft

The chart cites EIA monthly retail prices and deflates them with CPI-U, which is a defensible method. The ranking is plausible on its face. Nominal prices ran $3.50–$3.90 through 2011–2014, which inflates to well over $4 in 2026 dollars. Biden's term includes the 2022 spike above $5 nominal. Three framing choices do most of the work, though. First, "Trump 1" includes the spring 2020 pandemic collapse, when demand fell away and prices dropped below $2 nominal, which pulls his average down for reasons no one would credit to policy. Second, "Trump 2" stops at May 2026, before any price effect from the Iran strikes the historian record places in mid-July. Third, pinning the bars to administrations implies presidential control over a price set mostly by global crude markets. The chart also cuts against its own caption a little: Trump 2 ($3.32) comes in above Trump 1 ($3.25), so the second term is not the best on the chart. Because the caption belongs to Moore, these points stay in this analysis and do not appear as fact checks attributed to Trump.

Why gas prices, why now

The week's record is heavy with Iran. On July 14 he threatened strikes on bridges and power plants, and on July 18 he said strikes would "continue until I say it's enough." A widening Gulf conflict is the classic setup for rising pump prices, which makes this repost look like early reputation management on a cost voters feel directly. Freezing the comparison at a pre-escalation endpoint locks in a favorable number before any later price data can undercut it. This is a reasonable inference from timing, but it rests on the timing alone. The post may just as easily be routine sharing of flattering material from an ally.

Psychologically, the post sits at the maintenance end of the range. The scorekeeping is agentic and status-oriented: his terms go in red and are better, his predecessors go in blue and are worse. The one mechanism in play is splitting along party lines ("lower under Trump than Biden and Obama"). It is carried by color coding and a comparative caption, not by any attack. The picture casts him as competent steward and lets someone else make the claim. It contains no insult, no grievance and no named enemy beyond the two predecessors as benchmarks. That rules out a narcissistic-injury reading and puts the post with his steady stream of third-party validation reposts. The borrowed authority of a named economist and a government data source ("U.S. Energy Information Administration") is the main rhetorical device, along with a selective time window.

The UTC stamp converts to 2:16 p.m. EDT on a Sunday, when he was spending the weekend at Bedminster. This was a leisure afternoon, not a working block for staff, and it fits the pattern of image reposts that cluster on his account on weekends. With no text of his own, the attribution concerns only who picked and published the screenshot, and nothing in the image can settle that.
