A Catholic supporter's rebuke of his own Pope, republished without comment

The post is a screenshot of a June 14 post by the account "Bob GOYA" (@BobGOYA1). The handle and name point to Goya Foods CEO Bob Unanue, a public Trump backer and practicing Catholic. The description can't confirm who the bald man in the photograph is, so that identification stays tentative. The screenshot text sets two figures side by side: Pope Leo, whom "They called... The Peace Pope?", and Trump, whom "GOD CHOSE... TO BRING PEACE to the WORLD." It closes with a charge against the Pope: "my POPE HAS only CRITICIZED & WRONGLY JUDGED!" Under the text is a black-tie photo of the author with a thumbs-up Trump in front of an American Cornerstone Institute backdrop. Trump added no words. What can be analyzed is his choice to publish this, three weeks after the original went up.

What the choice accomplishes

The screenshot makes two claims he can't comfortably make in his own voice. The first is divine selection ("GOD CHOSE PRESIDENT TRUMP"). Coming from a supporter it reads as testimony, but from Trump it would sound like self-anointing. The second is a moral judgment of the sitting Pope. Leo XIV has repeatedly criticized administration policy on migration and military force. A direct presidential attack on the first American pope would cost him with Catholic voters. Letting a Catholic businessman deliver the rebuke ("my POPE") moves the criticism inside the Church, so it reads as a believer's disappointment and not a politician's grievance. Trump has done this before. Against Pope Francis in 2016 he answered directly ("disgraceful"). This time the idealization and the devaluation are both handed off to someone else.

Within the screenshot the splitting is total. One man "is doing just that," bringing world peace. The other has "only" criticized. The word "only" leaves the Pope no redeeming act. This is idealization/devaluation running through a proxy, and by publishing it Trump endorses the split while keeping deniability for its harshest line.

Peace claims two days after touting strikes

The events record shows that on July 4 Trump used his semiquincentennial address to tout strikes on Iran and Venezuela. Two days later he publishes a screenshot calling him the man chosen to bring peace to the world. The mismatch lives in the borrowed text, not in anything he wrote, but it follows a settled pattern. Coercive military action gets relabeled as peacemaking, and the religious leader who objects to it is cast as the one who "WRONGLY JUDGED." That is a mild reversal of moral positions, not a denial of any documented event.

Motive and narrative

The main drive is supply-seeking of a particular kind: a sacred endorsement. In "GOD CHOSE" the protagonist is the chosen one, a Hero/Savior figure, and the contrasting other is a religious authority whose standing the screenshot tries to lower. Trump holds the King archetype here. He is sanctioned from above, and the Pope becomes a rival claimant to moral authority. The story told is redemptive (a world in conflict, a chosen man restoring peace). No narcissistic injury can be tied to this date. The events list shows no new papal statement that week, and the three-week lag suggests the screenshot was pulled from a queue of supportive content rather than fired back at a fresh rebuke. The previous posts that day (a Harry Kane compliment, a link on immigration and home prices, two more media-only posts) fit a morning burst of reposting, not an episode of reactivity.

Authorship and risk

The post went up at 10:49 AM Eastern, during working hours, whether he was in Washington after the July 4 events or at Bedminster. With no prose from him there is no stylometric evidence either way. Supporter screenshots come from both Trump's own thumb and staff. The attribution concerns who picked the image, and the evidence can't settle it.

The Pope is set up as a moral opponent, but the text contains no call to act, no dehumanizing language, and no reference to anyone who might act against him. The rhetoric stays in the register of disappointment and delegitimization. The "chosen by God" framing deserves attention for another reason: it turns disagreement over policy into disagreement with providence, which makes criticism unanswerable for believers who accept the premise.
