And I wanna turn just for a moment to brand new polling out of Iowa on the Republican field for president. Joining us now from the big board, NBC News national political correspondent, Steve Kornacki. Steve, what are the numbers show? - Yeah, we're basically exactly, almost exactly 35 days, almost having a month until the Iowa caucuses. This what we're gonna show you, our brand new NBC News Des Moines Register poll. The Des Moines Register poll is taken by Ann Selzer. She is known as one of the best in the business and certainly the authority when it comes to polling on Iowa. So let me show you these numbers. Republican side for the Iowa caucuses, we now have Donald Trump leading with an outright majority in Iowa, 51% Ron DeSantis, a very distant second at 19, Nikki Haley, 16, Ramaswami and Christie at four. We last polled Iowa in October, also with the Des Moines Register. Since then, look at this, Donald Trump's lead. He has added eight points to his total. DeSantis up a couple, Haley, who had been moving flat. I think it's significant because in the month leading up to this poll, you had Ron DeSantis pick up the endorsement of the governor of Iowa, the endorsement of a key evangelical leader in Iowa, got a lot of press attention for completing a 99-county tour of Iowa, had a Fox News debate against Gavin Newsom in front of millions of Republican-leaning voters, and was part of that fourth Republican debate last week that Donald Trump wasn't in. So for all those things that we thought might be given to Santa Saboost over the last month, it is Trump, despite not participating in the debates again, it's Trump who's made the big gains, Trump who's moved to 51% in this Iowa poll. Just a couple other numbers we can show you behind this. These are evangelical voters in Iowa. Remember, Donald Trump finished third with this group in 2016 when he ran in Iowa and lost. Now he leads it overwhelmingly, exact same number as what he gets overall. Evangelicals could make up two out of every three caucus-goers in Iowa. That was the case the last time around. Where Trump really turns it on though, it is first-time caucus-goers. This tends to be a younger group overall. Look at that, 63% of folks who say for the first time, they're going to go to a caucus or rallying behind Donald Trump. This is independents. Independents are a small share of the Iowa electorate, but I think it gets to the basic problem Nikki Haley has. Look how much better Nikki Haley does among independents. It's true in Iowa, it's true in New Hampshire. It is true in every poll we have seen. But in Iowa and in most of these Republican primary and caucus states, big exception being New Hampshire, independents are going to be outnumbered significantly by core Republicans. Haley has yet to show that she can make the inroads she needs with core Republicans. That is to say, Republicans who like Donald Trump, she's yet to show she can make those inroads to be competitive. Also, in terms of enthusiasm, we asked folks, are you very extremely enthusiastic about your choice? Trump, look at that, two to one, three to one advantage over his rivals. We asked folks, is your mind made up? 77 out of 10% of Trump voters in Iowa say their minds are made up, again, more than double that of any of his nearest rivals. And then we asked this question here, a lot of words. This is about electability and Republicans' perception of it here. We've talked so much in 2023 about Donald Trump's trials. We will continue to talk about it in 2024, but we asked folks, can Donald Trump win the election regardless of his legal challenges? Now, nearly three out of four Republicans in Iowa say yes. Last month, that number wasn't even two out of three. Big jump there for Trump. We also said, hey, are Trump's legal challenges too much? They make it nearly impossible for him to win. 24% saying that, again, that number was over 30 last month. So all sorts of signs in this poll, Mika, showing that Donald Trump over the last month, last six weeks in Iowa has actually improved his position. And the last time we were this close to the caucuses, again, just about a month away, that a Republican candidate had a lead anywhere near this size. You got to go all the way back to George W. Bush. The year was 2000. Bush won the caucuses. Bush won the nomination. - NBC's Steve Kornacki, thank you very much for bringing those numbers. The first ever mugshot of a former president, Donald Trump's mugshot, has been the most sought-after image since the moment he rode down that golden escalator. Democrats in the media have been salivating at the thought of Donald Trump being booked in a jail cell. Just listen to how giddy and ghoulish MSNBC was last night. He will surrender himself for processing at an overcrowded jail with a reputation for violence and neglect, a jail that is accustomed to holding defendants facing charges up to and including violent crimes where stabbings are frequent. Actually, three people have lost their lives over the last month. That jail is where the disgraced ex-president of these United States is heading right now. Self-described journalist celebrated when Trump's mugshot was released. I still remember that he made five teenagers my age take a mugshot, that he wanted them not just take a mugshot, he wanted them dead. I despised Donald Trump because he, to me, signified the rich white guy in Manhattan that absolutely hated and despised me. People like Trump persecuted black and brown people in New York. It's what they did for fun. It's what they did for pleasure. So to me, this is justice. The fact that Manhattan didn't give him a mugshot, I thought was offensive. I think Fawny Willis is a hero. Even Joe Biden, who never answers questions, left his Lake Tahoe lair today to smirk. Have you seen Donald Trump's mugshot yet? His president, how do you want to know about that? I did see him tell me. What do you think? Thanks for the guy. That's the first time Biden's told the truth. It's a handsome mugshot. My wife says he looks fierce. He looks hard. But he doesn't look scared, does he? Doesn't look humiliated. He looks exactly the opposite of how the left thought he'd look. So the media, once they observed the impact of the image, now say it wasn't natural. It wasn't authentic, because the look was planned. The former president's team had actually discussed what they wanted that mugshot to look like prior to him going to the Fulton County Jail and taking it. And the former president himself ultimately decided that he wanted to look, quote, defiant. That is something that his advisors have told me. And he chose purposefully not to smile. How dare the former president think about how he's going to look in a photo? Sorry, we can't all be like Hunter and forget there's cameras everywhere. Or be like Joe Biden swallowing Jill's fingers. Can you believe the former president struck a determined glare after the Democrats arrested him for the fourth time? Why won't he just plead guilty and start serving his sentence? The press is now saying this about the mugshot. He wants you to look at him. Of course, the president enjoys flying around the country getting arrested by Democrat prosecutors. It's all a bid for attention, as if Donald Trump was having trouble drawing attention to himself. The man has literally made billions through self-promotion, marketing, and branding. Do you really think he spent the last couple of years thinking, you know, I was just president for four years. For that, I was a TV star. But the one thing I haven't done is a mugshot. That'll really get people to look at me. They compare his mugshot to Medusa. Once you look at him, your fate is already sealed. They go on to say, photos like this are typically exercises in enforced humility. Trump's the display of ongoing power. He treats his mugshot as our menace. So the media is worried they've created a monster. They understand how powerful imagery is. They traffic in imagery for a living. And they can feel the power of that picture. And they can't control it. It's not what they thought it would be. But no matter what they say about it, you can't lie to voters about a photograph. You don't need the media to interpret a photograph for you. They've lost their grip on the story. And they've handed Donald Trump a political gift that'll last a lifetime. Literally, everyone's talking about the mugshot, Democrats and Republicans. The media doesn't own the photo. The public owns it. And the memes are sensational. Here's this one showing a White House portrait of the mugshot being put up. Here's another one, Doug Life. The Trump mugshot's like the new Che Guevara t-shirt. The image represents something. You feel something when you see it. It's iconic. It's infamous. And the media feels it too. One image that will be cemented in history. I mean, how many images are there of Donald Trump? He is maybe the most famous person on the planet. But this particular photo with the Fulton County-- you can tell me exactly what this is, emblazoned on the corner there. That is going to be iconic and infamous. They are going to embrace it. And they are going to use it as the ultimate example of his entire campaign, which is, they're out to get me. The mugshot's already being capitalized on. I mean, Democrats are fundraising off it. But Donald Trump is already selling t-shirts, coozies, mugs, car magnets on the site. It is jet fuel for the campaign. And ironically, for his legal defense fund. Independent sellers are printing the mugshot on coffee mugs. Anything with the Trump mugshot's a hot commodity. Wait until Halloween. You're going to see the Trump mugshot costume. You're going to see Trump mugshot flags at tailgates, Trump mugshot birthday cakes, Trump mugshot bikinis. And it's tapping into something real. Just look at urban Atlanta yesterday when Trump's motorcade drove by. The mugshot's turned Trump into a sympathetic character in black America. Don't underestimate the power of a famous mugshot. Yes, you better believe it. Look what happened to Martha Stewart. She caught that felony. She goes to all the cookouts with Snoop Dogg. Bro, Trump is a brother now. You go to jail in zone six Atlanta, you a brother. Straight up, I'm sorry, you can say what you want. But they [BLEEP] with people that went to jail. They [BLEEP] with people that been in the penitentiary. In elections, if 2% of the black vote swings to Republicans, Biden loses. Now Donald Trump's being seen as a martyr. Donald Trump, before he ran for president, was seen as a popular icon in black communities until the Democrat machine smeared him as racist. But now Trump represents someone persecuted by the man. And he represents the forgotten man. That is a powerful combination. The left's overzealous political prosecutions have backfired and turned Trump into a force of nature. The streets are talking about him. In a way, they've never talked about him before. Democrats thought the mugshot was going to be the end for Trump. But it may be the start of a new beginning.
