## Post text

> If Tom Cotton were putting Arkansas first, he would give them an extra hour of daylight and, more importantly, they wouldn’t have to run all over their houses, farms, work places, and everywhere else, twice a year, having to change their Clocks, and often forgetting to do so. That is really putting Arkansas FIRST, and I know, because, unlike Tom, I won that Great State, three times, and by almost 40 points! Additionally, it would be a very nice and easy WIN for the Republican Party, in particular, the Republican Senate, a place where we could use some WINS! The House approved, long ago, “The Sunshine Protection Act,” by a very Bipartisan Vote, 308 to 117. It has been held up in the Senate, a place where things go to die, by Tom Cotton, for months! — And for what, other than “ego?” The reason that it was terminated in the past was that certain Congressmen and Senators, from long ago, used it as a “negotiating chip” for far more important Legislation — And they got plenty! Everybody loved it, but it was given up in order to get bigger, better, and more consequential “things.” Give the Republican Party a Senatorial WIN, for a change! Thank you to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and all Members of the House of Representatives, both Republican and Democrat, who so overwhelmingly approved “The No More Ridiculous Changing of Your Clocks Act,” and who so strongly want their “SUN” in the afternoon, rather than the early morning — Loved by Farmers, Sportsman, and Sports (Copy of PGA TOUR letter below!). Daylight Saving Time is 65-35 in the Polls but, why wouldn’t it be — Who wouldn’t want more “SUN” in the afternoon than in the morning? It’s even been proven to be better in stopping CRIME, something of which I have done an Historic job because, CRIMINALS DON’T LIKE WORKING IN THE LIGHT. Not wanting to change your many Clocks, including for Church Steeples and Municipal Buildings is, however, a 100% issue. TAKE THE WIN TOM, JUST TAKE THE WIN! YOU NEED IT, AND SO DOES OUR BELOVED REPUBLICAN PARTY! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

# Analysis

_Machine-generated by trump.fm on 2026-10-03T17:52:37.067Z (UTC): a model's reading of this post, not his words. Its psychological terms describe the language, not a clinical assessment of him._

## A pressure campaign on an ally, second round in one day

This is the second Truth Social post on October 3 aimed at Senator Tom Cotton over the Sunshine Protection Act. The earlier one spoke to Arkansas voters, called Cotton "a friend of mine," and asked them to "tell Tom to, GET IT DONE!" In this post the friendliness is gone. Cotton's motive is reduced to "ego" in scare quotes, his loyalty to his state is questioned ("If Tom Cotton were putting Arkansas first"), and the close shifts from appeal to taunt: "TAKE THE WIN TOM, JUST TAKE THE WIN! YOU NEED IT." That last clause is the sharpest line in the post. It suggests a sitting senator is politically weak enough to need a gift from the president. In a few hours Cotton went from "friend" to "YOU NEED IT." That is what this post adds to the record: a co-partisan who blocks one of his preferences gets pushed toward the devalued pole but isn't expelled. Cotton is still inside "OUR BELOVED REPUBLICAN PARTY."

The hostility has limits. The stakes are clock settings. Readers are asked to pressure a senator through ordinary political channels, and the only things said about Cotton personally are his ego and his need for wins.

## The Arkansas margin grew between posts

The morning post said Trump won Arkansas "the last by by 34 points." This one says "three times, and by almost 40 points!" Certified results put his margins at about 27 points (2016), 28 (2020) and 31 (2024). Both figures are inflated, and the second inflates the first on the same day. The number is there to make a comparison: "unlike Tom, I won that Great State." Cotton has won Arkansas statewide twice. In 2020 he won by about 33 points against a Libertarian, with no Democrat on the ballot, which is a larger margin than any of Trump's. The comparison claims standing over Cotton on his home ground, and the returns don't support it. Rounding electoral margins upward is a baseline habit. Going from 34 to "almost 40" looks like exaggeration under competitive pressure, and the morning figure was already wrong in the same direction.

## Projection, a rewritten history, and a self-praise detour

The post accuses Cotton of acting from "ego" while centering its author's own margins and his "Historic job" on crime. That reads as projection of the motive the post itself shows (medium confidence). The history of the policy is reshaped to fit the argument. Permanent time was dropped, he says, because legislators "used it as a 'negotiating chip' for far more important Legislation — And they got plenty!" In fact the 1974 trial of year-round daylight time was repealed within a year, after public backlash over dark winter mornings, which is the same objection Cotton raises now. This rationalization erases the real case against the bill and swaps in a horse-trading story, which leaves Cotton's position looking like vanity alone.

The crime passage turns to self-reference mid-sentence: "It's even been proven to be better in stopping CRIME, something of which I have done an Historic job because, CRIMINALS DON'T LIKE WORKING IN THE LIGHT." The clause about his record has nothing to do with clocks. It is the kind of grandiose aside typical of his own drafting, and the comma after "because" separates the causal claim from what it is supposed to explain.

## Whose voice

The post went up at about 1:46 p.m. Eastern on a Saturday. Daytime posting points toward staff, and some content was clearly supplied by staff: the exact 308-117 vote, the thanks to Speaker Mike Johnson, and the attached PGA TOUR letter. The prose around those facts is his. There are scare quotes on "ego," "things," and "SUN." The bill gets renamed mid-post as "The No More Ridiculous Changing of Your Clocks Act," after the morning post called it the "We Don't Want to Change Our Clocks Twice a Year Act." He writes "Sportsman" for sportsmen and "an Historic." He asks, "Who wouldn't want more 'SUN' in the afternoon than in the morning?" And the close is an all-caps chant. The likeliest explanation is that he dictated or drafted it himself with a staff fact sheet at hand.

## Reasoning about daylight

The post opens with a common misconception: permanent daylight time would "give them an extra hour of daylight." It shifts an hour from morning to evening and adds nothing. Later the post states the trade-off correctly ("more 'SUN' in the afternoon than in the morning"). It also separates two questions properly: which time to keep, which he scores at "65-35," and whether to stop switching, which he calls "a 100% issue." Polls show a clear majority against switching, but not 100 percent, and the split between permanent daylight and permanent standard time is much closer than 65-35. Trump himself called it "a 50-50 issue" in March 2025, three months after promising Republicans would "eliminate Daylight Saving Time." Here he presents a contested preference as a lopsided one, which is ordinary consensus inflation, and he doesn't acknowledge his own earlier statements.

The repeated renaming of the bill is deliberate wordplay, not confusion over names. The sentences run long but hold together, and the post stays on clocks from start to finish apart from the crime detour. Nothing in the language departs from his 2020s baseline.

## The king and the withheld favor

The figure here is a king handing a vassal a favor and taking offense when it is turned down: "Give the Republican Party a Senatorial WIN, for a change!" The Senate is called "a place where things go to die" and "a place where we could use some WINS," so the grievance falls on the institution's procedure (one senator's hold) as much as on Cotton. The hierarchy being enforced is inside the party. The president's preferences count as the party's wins, and a senator who withholds one is said to be serving his "ego" instead of Arkansas.

## Fact Verification

| Claim | Verdict | Evidence |
|-------|---------|----------|
| "Trump won Arkansas three times, 'by almost 40 points'" | **False** | Trump carried Arkansas in 2016 by about 26.9 points, in 2020 by about 27.6 and in 2024 by about 30.6. None came close to 40. His post earlier the same day put the last margin at 34, which was also too high. |
| "Unlike Tom Cotton, Trump won Arkansas (implied: Cotton lacks comparable statewide standing)" | **Mostly False** | Cotton has won Arkansas statewide twice, by about 17 points in 2014 and about 33 points in 2020. The 2020 margin is larger than any of Trump's Arkansas margins. |
| "The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act by a bipartisan vote of 308 to 117" | **True** | Reporting confirms House passage with a 308-117 bipartisan vote. |
| "Tom Cotton is holding up the bill in the Senate" | **Mostly True** | Cotton opposed a prior Senate version over dark winter mornings. He said several senators opposed the current version in committee and that he planned to ask Majority Leader Thune not to bring it to a vote. Others also oppose the bill, so the hold is not his alone. |
| "Permanent clock policy was terminated in the past because legislators used it as a negotiating chip for other legislation" | **False** | The US tried year-round daylight time in January 1974 during the energy crisis. Congress reversed it that October after public backlash over dark winter mornings, including concern for schoolchildren. It was not traded away for other legislation. |
| "Daylight Saving Time is 65-35 in the polls" | **Mostly False** | Polls show a majority want to stop switching clocks. Preference between permanent daylight and permanent standard time is much closer. A March 2025 Gallup poll found 54% favored eliminating daylight saving time. Trump himself called the issue '50-50' in March 2025. |
| "More evening daylight has been proven to reduce crime" | **Mostly True** | Doleac and Sanders (2015) found robberies fell about 7% after the spring shift to daylight time, with larger drops in the evening hours that gained light. 'Proven' overstates findings from one main line of research that is limited to certain crimes. |
| "Permanent daylight time would give Arkansas 'an extra hour of daylight'" | **False** | Clock policy does not change total daylight. Permanent DST moves an hour of light from morning to evening. Winter sunrises would come about an hour later. |

## That day

_From trump.fm's machine-generated digest of the day, not his words._

**Trump promises every adult $5,000 if Republicans win the House and Senate**

He spent late Friday night and most of Saturday campaigning for the midterms, mostly through prepared endorsements, book plugs and video clips, several of them posted twice. The standout was a promise to give every adult $5,000 if Republicans win both the House and the Senate, alongside roughly $100 checks to seniors from a Medicare fund. In the afternoon he took up a fight with Senator Tom Cotton over ending clock changes, posting what he said was Cotton's cellphone number and urging Arkansas voters to call it. Friday night also brought a clip of what appears to be his defense secretary calling the press "anti-American losers," and an attack on news reports about a Federal Reserve investigation as "total lies." The mood stayed upbeat and promotional, with only brief flashes of irritation, and the day ended with him heading to Ohio.
