A pre-dawn golf clip, captioned by its subject

The clip's contents are not transcribed here, but the caption's own grammar identifies who is in it: "Such a great golfer" arrives with no subject, and the possessive in "Too bad I have very little time to play" fills the slot. The praise is his own, routed through a construction that never has to say "I am."

That elision is the whole rhetorical mechanism. A reader supplies the missing subject and thereby performs the compliment, which costs the speaker less than asserting it. It is the same economy he uses when quoting other people's praise of him at rallies — the admiration is more persuasive when it seems to originate outside the mouth speaking.

The unplayed round as a credential

"Too bad" is doing the second job. It frames a limited golf schedule as a deprivation, which only works as a statement about how consuming the presidency is. Regret is the delivery vehicle for an industriousness claim, and the claim is the part that does not survive contact with the record: his outings at his own properties are among the better-documented entries in the public presidential calendar, and "very little time to play" is a substantial understatement of them.

Worth separating from his harder distortions, though. Nobody is told to believe it, no contrary account is called a hoax, and no one is attacked for having counted. This is self-flattering framing around a mostly real underlying competence — he is, by the reporting of people who have played with him, a genuinely strong amateur, whatever the status of the club championships he claims at clubs he owns.

What makes it unremarkable, and why that is worth recording

No adversary appears. No institution, no press outlet, no rival, no grievance — and in a week that included the Dallas convention, the Charlie Kirk anniversary, and an unusual 9/11 sequence in which Ground Zero organizers declined to give him a speaking slot and he went to the Pentagon instead, the absence is the notable feature. A snub of that kind is the sort of thing that has generated retaliatory posting before; here, hours later, the account is circulating a golf swing at dawn.

The self-appraisal itself sits inside his four-decade baseline. Physical competence is one of the oldest pillars of his self-presentation, and it is cheap supply: admiration solicited without a fight, from a domain where the underlying skill is real. The grandiosity is present at low amplitude, load-bearing but unstressed.
