Members of the DC Council sent a strongly worded letter to the 20 governors who have National Guardsmen patrolling the streets of DC demanding that they recall them back to their home, states, or territories. That's not going to fly with the Justice Department. The Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald is saying, "I am surprised and saddened that you would show such callousness instead of compassion and care toward your constituents who now live in a city with far less violence and fear thanks to the National Guard and the DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force." This letter asking to pull the troops is unwelcome also to the poor mother of a congressional intern who was murdered. I think the message is that something's working and I think extra eyes and ears on the ground is helping this happen. And the numbers bear that out in DC homicides are down 49.3%. There were 46 homicides in 2026. That's down from 82 last year. Look at Memphis, Tennessee where there's National Guard. The murders there are down or rather the crime is down there 43.7%. There were 67 homicides this year so far down from 119 last year.
