We eventually broadcast a story about the Hunter Biden laptop after the midterm elections in 2022. We commissioned a forensic review. I got a copy of the laptop data. I have it here still. I went to a lot of effort to get the cleanest copy of the laptop data, the same data that was provided to the FBI, because I didn't want to have any professional journalistic risk for CBS News. I wanted this thing to be totally locked down. When we did the story, we did it after the midterms. I argued against that because it was ready before the midterms, and my training is that you should always do the story when it's ready to go. You should not be dictated by the political cycle. Once we got the laptop story on the morning news, I felt that there was so much there that we could still do. For example, in the text messages, there's unfortunately the use of the N-word, the liberal use of the N-word. I thought this was worthy of a story, but I was told that it was not something that interested CBS News. Then I asked for a forensic review of the laptop, and we found that there were more than half a dozen emails that were likely used by Joe Biden. I thought that was a story. The answer that came back was, "Well, we need to know what the content is of the emails," but that was going to be a years-long process. There were a lot of reasons I was told not to do it, not to pursue it. I spent a lot of my time at CBS following the Hunter Biden story. One of the things that really struck me is this kind of disconnect. I didn't understand how a senior executive like George Cheese could tell me that this was a high priority for the network and for his boss, and yet the executives at CBS News showed producers anchors could refuse that. I came to the conclusion that they must have felt that they were more powerful than George Cheese, which was astonishing to me. I'd never worked at a place where a directive from the top would be so defied.

Okay, multiple people, including a former US Olympian, have now been arrested for allegedly vandalizing the newly renovated reflecting pool in the nation's capital. Kevin Kork joins us now from the White House with all the latest on this. Kevin, good morning. Yeah, frankly, this is, and good morning to all of you, this is a sad story because all Americans, I don't care about your political stripes, enjoy the reflecting pool. But as Charlie points out, we're talking about someone who's gone from competing and Olympic sized swimming pools to being accused of vandalizing the reflecting pool along the mall. And of course, he ends up in cuffs and apparently he's not the only one. We're speaking of a former Olympian, canoeist, 67 year old David Hearn, three time Olympian, by the way, said he was cycling by the monument on Friday. He noticed a piece of the pools under liner floating in the water, but authorities, they didn't buy his story at all. And now they're accusing him of being one of several individuals of trying to sabotage the project with a pair of arrests being made so far. In fact, the president said as much and opposed untrue social announcing, quote, many additional people have been arrested, having to do with the disgraceful vandalism of our beautiful reflecting pool. What these terrible vandals have done is a true affront to both presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and should be dealt with accordingly. They also poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the pool. Finally, he adds this. We are very proud of what we have done with this magnificent structure, and we'll get it repaired quickly to an equal level of beauty. Now, the pool, which had been restored to a beautiful cerulean as part of the American 250 celebration, spent years mired in an algae covered state until the big cleanup. But suddenly we started reading reports of a new algae bloom forming. And the peeling lower coating, critics said it was a shoddy job done by the contractors. Turns out that's not true at all. And now we know why. Now, the cleanup of this $14 million project is ongoing, even at this very hour. But given the fact that the Fourth of July is right around the corner, to get it ready, they're going to have to work around the clock, guys. All right. Really incredible. Some people just need to get a life. They need to get a hobby. They need to find something better to do. All right. Thanks, Kevin.
