This is also National Purple Heart Day and we're here to honor and celebrate the unyielding patriotism and grit and devotion to America's Purple Heart veterans' great emotion and great love. The Purple Heart dates back to August 7, 1782. That's a long time when General George Washington awarded a heart-shaped purple cloth to three soldiers for outstanding gallantry and service in battle. This afternoon we're joined by dozens of Purple Heart recipients and their families and just as General Washington did 243 years ago, today we give our everlasting thanks to you and your unbelievable families. We want to thank you very much for being here. It's my great honor.

It's a truly historic day, and under this president's leadership, this historic peace deal has been truly made into reality. When people actually go back and look at the history, you hit the high points there. These two countries have been in some form of conflict, sometimes very bloody, other times a very tense situation where conflict could spark out again at any moment for over 35 years. So for this event to happen today, again, President Trump said in some of his remarks today that his aspiration, his greatest aspiration as president is to bring about peace and stability. This is yet another example of his effective leadership that brought these two leaders together in a way that hasn't happened before. And I can tell you there was a lot of work that led to this moment. This wasn't something that just happened overnight. Every Purple Heart tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and purpose. It speaks of a price paid for the soldier beside you, the country behind you, and the generations of Americans yet to come. Going to the Army at 18, you know, left, ended up in Iraq where I lost my leg. My name is Gerald Enter. I have three Purple Hearts. I served with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam in between '67 and '68. I got my Purple Heart in March of '68. Wounded on the 25th of February, 1991 in the Albogonoa field, Operation Desert Storm. I have earned two Purple Hearts in my career. Was recipient of the Purple Heart on or about, actually December the 14th, 1970. It was not a good day for me or a lot of other folks that day. I'm the sister of Captain Lance Peterson, who was a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the Vietnam War. I was wounded 29 years ago in Saudi Arabia at the bombing of Cobar Towers. I was wounded on the 30th of May, 2004 in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. Almost 2 million people have earned this award and over 430,000 gave their lives. And I so appreciate what the President is doing. Those who wear this medal ran into bullets, faced ferocious bombs, and shed their blood on the field of battle. We will never forget what they did. We will always use them as an example of bravery and courage and strength. Now signed the proclamation officially declaring this as National Purple Heart Day. Very special day.
